Show 1 THE GIRLS CINCHED I Em De Mar and Her Two Proteges Fined and Imprisoned I I The case against Emma De Mar and I her two girls Medland and Neilson came to trial at last in the Police Court this afternoon The prosecution introduced as witnesses wit-nesses a large number of policemen and others familiar with the workings J I of the house and established the I usual facts as to the reputation of the house the Ieeper the inmates and the frequenters The girls offered no defense and the case was submitted without argument Mr Moyle however asked that the full penalty of the law be inflicted in these cases He said that the city had been trying to break up the establishments for years and that every effort had been made to do it without cruelty or hardship to the offenders but that they had in a measure defied the laws and they should now be made to tand the consequences The Judge stated that as the defendants defend-ants were old offenders he had no inclination in-clination to deal leniently with them and he therefore sentenced Em De Mar to pay a fine of 99 and costs and to serve a term of ninety days imprisonment imprison-ment in the city jail and each of the girls were sentenced to pay a fine of 99 and to serve fifty days imprisonment The defense gave notice of an appeal and the amount of the bond was fixed |
