Show Vermont War Claim VASHTNGTON Oct 14 Third Auditor Williams has written a letter to the Secretary Secre-tary of the Treasury in which he says that under the act to indemnefy the States for expenses incurred by them in defense of the Union in the late war Vermont at various times filed claims amounting in the aggregate aggre-gate to 924745 of which 85784 has been paid leaving a balance of 66890 which that State is now asking to have paid That he the Third Auditor finds upon examination examina-tion that there are certain credits which reduce I re-duce the indebtedness to a net balance of I 543780 in favor of the Government I 1868 when this sum was actually due then TTnif > rl Sf Atfifl the the-n A of Vermont received under uu 1LU an Act u of Congress v 16464 for the I CongesB cost of defending frontiers from invasion from Canada in 1864 and finally the Third Auditor says he is informed that the State of Vermont sold her arms and equipments for Veront which was put into the State treasury The Auditor concludes by calling the Secretarys attention to the fact that the Vermont Legislature is now in session and that pending such action as the Secretary Secre-tary may see fit to take in the premises the claim of Vermont will be I held suspended I |
