Show THE WEG6ELAND PORTRAIT OF GRANT II I I Speeches on the Occasion 01it Ex I bibition at the Walker House I Lat Evcniner A very good sized audience gathered in front of the Walker House last night The cool shower had tempered the air to a most delightful degree and as the crowd below stood looking up at tin Weggeland portrait of General Grant illuminated by a dozen incandescent lights a feeling of satisfaction was noticeable notice-able from all present At about 9 oclocl General Connor stepped forward and introduced in-troduced COb O J HOIL1STUR Who referred in a few wellchosen and I complimentary words to the kindness of Judge Gilchrist in having such a fine I picture painted at his own expense as a I tribute and gift to the G A IL in mom > ry of Grnt Col Holster said he resembled re-sembled Grant in one respect if no more and that was in not being able to make a I speech He had therefore written a brief Biography of the heros bright career a short synopsis of which is all that can be printed today The speaker said in reviewing iewing Grants military achievements his successive triumphs and worthy pro notions no one could fail in acknowledging edging his supreme efforts From the time he was a student at West Point until he had fought in the Mexican war and made a start on forts Donelson and Henry he was comparatively unknown But his lame and work spread all over the whole world and everyone soon learned of U S Grant His promotions after Donel son Shiloh Vicksburg and all through the dreadful war were earned by honest labor with no other purpose than to serve the right He was a man of deeds and actions rather than of speech His labors la-bors are worthy of emulation and are I immortal I is befitting all American citizens to group together now while his remains lie in state and recount Grants deeds on the battle field and as the modest quiet but decisive man he always was Mr Holster said so much that a good and true in respect to General Gen-eral Grant that it is impossible to give an idea in a few words of the tributes tendered dered the great American JUDGE GILCHRIST Was then called forward and said the idea to haye Grant presented to the Salt Lake public in the full vigor of life had < suggested itself to his mind The picture was painted by Mr Weg geland in two days time and as a tribute to the memory of the great General he had wanted it exhibited and then presented to the G A R as a gift He acknowledged the courtesies extended extend-ed by Messrs Marshall and Tupper of the Electric Light Company also to Major Erb for permission exhibit the picture in front of the hotel GOVERNOR MURRAY Was received with applause on being introduced in-troduced to the audience The Governor was in a touching mood in speaking of the noble characteristics of Gen Grant In living over again in the minds of those present the sieges and conflicts encountered encoun-tered by Grant during his official life as soldier and chief executive of this nation Governor Murray seemed to fully realize the greatness of the man with whom his brother had been identified at West Point and through the Mexican War The Governor spoke of Grants deeds of valor his one purpose to accomplish accom-plish the right em1 After paying him all the honor and respect re-spect due a good man for whom every settlement and city is today mourning throughout this land the Governor gave way to other speakers MK CHARLES 1 IRYAN resident of the Colorado Press Association As-sociation was introduced and in a L few select words set forth the universal feeling of the whole land He said After all our hero sleeps he is not dead he belongs to the immoral In eulogistic terms he re kited a few reminiscences of General Jrant He thought the demonstration most proper and he was glad as a near then neighbor adjourned to be present The meeting |
