Show THAT HEARTLESS MURDER The murderer Proud of His Deed The Trouble All Over a Drink of Vulsky Messrs Allen G Campbell Pat Ryan P B McKeon and James Lindsoy arrived with the dead body of the murdered Mike Cullen this morning P B McKeon is the man who knows most of the awful tragedy outside of the perpetrator of the cruel coldbloodefd deed and the third party who accompanied them in the wagon The following is his version of the matter The three men had been together during dur-ing the daylbefore the awful affair took place drinking some but in no way at outs with each other They Mike Cullen Cul-len Andy Calton and Jerry Tibberty left for Star District in a covered spring wagon at about halfpast 0 They rode quietly and pleasantly enough until they reached the railroad track a few miles out of town At this point Mike asked for a drink and called for the bottle which was shown to him behind the seat At this time Andy who was driving and Mike were the only two in the wagon Tibberty having alighted to pick up the whiplash which had come ofF After the two men had drunk together Calton called Tibberty to come and join in with them Accordingly Tibberty who had come to the wagon was anxious i to comply with the invitation invita-tion but Mike putting the bottle back into his coat pocket denied Tibberty the pleasure of wetting his throat Cal ton insisted but Mike was equally persistent per-sistent and Tibberty left theni to walk ahead Andy called to him however to come back and he would make the s b give up the bottle A scrimmage ensued between the two in the seat which resulted in Mike getting Calton down with his head over the seats end They had ceased this game however when Calton grabbed up a white bundle of his own and jumped from the seat to f the ground He quickly opened the bun die from which he extracted a new 45 calibre American improved revolver With thin he ran to the side of the wagon j and i SHOT MIKE THROUGH THE KELT The ball entered his side and passing through the body broke the left arm just above the elbow At this time Tibberty ran back and called out No more of that In response the coolbloobed Calton remarked Ive started in now and I may as well finish him and at the same time emptying a load intoMikes dead body Three bullets took effect in his body and one in his leg all of which passed clear through According to the directions of Tibberty the wagon was turned around and the three rode back to Milford They entered the town by the accustomed accus-tomed road and drov up through the streets to A G Campbells store It was hero that Mr McKeon who had been attracted to the spot by the deathlike death-like appearance on Mikes face learned i that they carried A DEAD MAX IX THE SCAT Alighting from the drivers position and the side of the sitting corpse Gallon proclaimed his guilt In accordance with a command from McKeon he was turned over to the sheriff who perchnnce had come up at that time Not content with telling the story thus far Gallon continued I shot the s of a b three times after he was dead I bought that pistol to kill some s of a b with but I didnt think it would bo j Mike but Ive killed him if he is Halts brother Calton was taken to Minersville where Justice Woods committed him without bail to await the action of the Grand Jury An inquest was held at Mill ord before the following witnesses A M Stoddard John Williams and P JJ McKeon After the inquest the body was hastily prepared for shipment to the city The body was turned over to Sexton Sex-ton Taylor this morning where it will be embalmed ready to ship to Maryland the deceased having made a request to that effect sometime ago when the thought of death chanced to cross his mind Mike Cullen is said to have been one of the most peaceable and agreeable men about Milford and it was and still is a surprise to all that he would be the one picked upon for so foul a murder The telegram which was forwarded to his brother Matt at St Paul Minnesota was again forwarded to Chicago Mr Cullen being supposed to be about that far on his journey homeward I |
