Show Unsatisfactory Improvements WASHINGTON July IGThe chief of engineers engi-neers has received the annual report of Captain E H Ruffner U S Engineer upon the improvement of tho Mississippi from Beg Moines Rapids to the month of the Illinois Illi-nois River Captain Ruffner says The general result of the workvon this part of the river for the past ni eyears is not encouraging en-couraging The nver is BoI larRe that the money appropriated is not en6ugh to build S works in sufficient number to control the river to such a degree as to enable the engineer engi-neer to predict what the final result will be in the depth of the channel Erosion has been largely controlled and the movement move-ment of the islands is less and banks are caving to a less degree than formerly but it cannot be stated that the general depth of the navigable channel has been increased There Is no reason to think Congress will iive a greater amount in the future than in the past The sum which has been on eEl average less than 100000 isnot enough to carry on with sunose the plan of permanent improvement It would bet5cr > toalter the plan of work than to pretend to c3 f1 tinuo it on the presentjcourse |
