Show THE ORANGE RIOTS There seems just one way to prevent Orange riots New York was in an annual an-nual turmoil over the 12th of July until one year she called out the militia and shot down the rioters It was a severe remedy but there have been no more Orange riots in the State of New York The Orangemen had a parade at Paterson Pater-son New Jersey yesterday and when one enthusiastic parader shouted Hurrah Hur-rah for King William he was knocked down with a brick and the riot began There is nothing in the constitution or laws of this country to prevent any one from shouting for King William if he wants to King William was a not very amiable Hollander who did agreat deal for English liberty without intending it As he has been dead nearly two hundred years he can hurt nobody If anyone believes his happiness happi-ness bound up in shouting for the deceased de-ceased monarch once a year he has a perfect right to shout without being hit with a brick or otherwise maltreated If anyone objects to this manifestation he should go somewhere else The main object of Orangemens Day however seems to be to get up a row Where rioting has been sternly suppressed the parade has been abandoned If the Paterson authorities had dealt promptly with the rioters they would have saved much future trouble and the Orange mens parade would have died out of itself |
