Show VIOLATIONS OF THE GAME LAW j I j Trout Belli jr Killed iii tbcITXountain Streams By Giant Powder Loud complaints have reached us within with-in the past few days of the indiscriminate I slaughter oi fish in the canyon streams by the use of giant powder Night before last three young men of this city saw two men with at least fifty pounds fish in a sack tied on a saddle horSe coming from Parleys Canyon These men could not have caught so many fish in a legitimate legiti-mate manner in the time they claimed for they left the city in the morning rode thirty miles and got back to the city two I or three hours before dark it only needs the eye of a man accustomed to using giant powder for fishing to be able to tell by their when they appearance are killed in that manner To walk along and examine the fish in the different markets in this city it is apparent that many of them are taken in that manner The fish killed by giant powder are not near so good as those taken by the hook the shock of the explosion seeming to I take away that natural sweet taste found in the flesh of the fish that are caught by the angler A great many fish caught in this manner are foisted upon our fish dealers who should in justice to their patrons and in the interests of protecting the fish in the mountain streams use their best endeavors to discover how the fish are caught On the other hand they will say that by taking too close scrutiny of the fish that they will have to pay a heavier price for them and thereby lessen theirprofits This may be true yet their patrons will receive better satisfaction and the fish will be protected for when the fishermen find that the dealers understand under-stand in what manner the fish are taken they will take the trouble to catch them with the hook hereafter A cartridge of giant powder will not only kill the large fish within the vicinity i of the explosion but also destroys the small fish and spawn for several yards around it At that rate the fish are decimated de-cimated so fast that in a few years those streams that were excellent for trout fishing fish-ing deserted entirely bv the finny I tribe I would be a good idea for the Game Protective Society of this city to investigate and keep watch for this class of offenders against the game laws The fact that two or three men can go out into the canyons for two or throe days and return with a wagonload of fish is enough to give strangers the idea thai they were not taken by fair means |
