Show JIM THE PENMAN The Palmer Company Score Another An-other Success at the Theatre S ast Evening I The Theatre was again crowded to the utmost last evening on the occasion of the second appearance of A M Palmers celebrated Madison Square company and the audience was again composed of the intelligence fashion and refinement of the city Many who were present on the opening night were there again last evening and only those who had seen the company before were prepared for the treat of such a performance Jim the Penman is a play that would be difficult to characterize It has the elements of the sensational and yet there is such an utter absence of the usual blood and thunder that it could hardly be placed in this CASS Emotional Emo-tional probably comes nearer to expressing express-ing it than any other single word and still it is unlike the usual emotional drama The play is natural and well written so far as the mere writing is concerned but the plot falls short and there is positively nothing upon which the play could stand alone If the success of Saints and Sinners would be doubtful if presented by another an-other company the utter failure of Jim the Penman would he assured if placed in any other hands But so far as we have seen the company they seem to make a point of taking a mere skeleton for a play and then showing their power as actora by bringing out and making points which would never be detected in the translation of an ordinary player They do not act their parts they simply create them and from the combination of these individual creations the play takes its form its character its all except ex-cept its words But if there is nothing to Jim the Penman as a play Jim the Penman as creation of the Palmer Company is beyond doubt a great success It is presented with that same smoothness smooth-ness and the same care which characterizes char-acterizes all their performances Each actor makes a way for himself and wins his praise for himself Miss Caroline Hill who made her first appearance here last evening is a very highly finished actress whose chief characteristic is a gentle quiet refined effectiveness which tells in every line she speaks every expression of her face and every movement of her graceful form Maud Harrison whom we have seen so often before was perfectly at home in a character entirely in her line and yet rather too little is seen of the lady I Mr Robinson as Jim was simply great He acts with telling effect and I with an unusual finish Le Moyne Holland Kelcey and Mas sen held the places they won the night I before and brought upon themselves many new laurels The success of the Madison Square engagement en-gagement has induced the management to present another of their eastern successes I suc-cesses Sealed Instructons tomorrow t night In the cast are Messrs Stoddart Robinson Kelcey LeMoyne and Missed Hill Harrison and Russell It is so seldom sel-dom the public see so powerful an attraction attrac-tion we think it a matter of congratulation congratula-tion that we are to have one more night I of the Madison Square Company |
