Show BITS FROM BEAVER Judge Boreman Suspends Sentence on an Aged PolygamistA Big II I Batch of Indictments Amusements Etp The following items under date of the I 14th inst are from the DEMOCRATS Beaver Utah correspondent In the Second District Court this morn ing Laban Morrill was called up for sentence sen-tence he having previously pleaded guilty to the charge of unlawful cohabitation cohabita-tion prepared against him by tthe Grand Jury The accused is now 72 years of age He is said to have been one of the infamous infa-mous council that assembled at Cedar City in 1856 and decided the fate of the emigrants at Mountain Meadows He however has the credit of having strong I ly l opposed from first to last l the J y pp frst o e murder of those unfortunates A strong appeal for suspension of sentence sen-tence on account of the defendants advanced ad-vanced age and previous good conduct aside from the offense with which he stood charged was made by his attor hy ator neys in which the assistant United States attorney joined Judge Boremaa then called up the defendant and said Mr Morrill your attorney has requested re-quested that the court suspend sentence by reason of your old age your general I good character and the belief that you will live in obedience to the laws from this time on The prosecuting attorney has united in the request Taking all these circumstances < into consideration and the fact that the court is led to be liege that you will henceforth live in I obedience to the laws I will suspend sen tence for the present and when the court wants you it will send for you cour The old fellow earnestly thanked the I judge for hii ° leniency and then went on I his way i joining The Grind Jury after a session of ten cays duration was discharged on Thurs day last Eighteen indictments were re turned and it is surmised though not known to anyone except the Grand Jurors and the court officials that about one half of the bills were returned against I parties for violation of the antipolygamy law There has been a grand hegira of polygamous suspects from this locality during the past three weeks The case of the People against James W Pace is set for trial on Wednesday next The defendant stands indicted for the murder of a man named Judd Wood ard at Panguitch a few weeks ago Judge Kirkpatrick who came down from Salt Lake to attend to some legal business here returned home this morn I ing I mgBeaver Beaver has amusements galore at present Last night a grand ball was II given tonight the Home Dramatic Com j pany gives a performance and a number I I of horse n for h L L II races or heavy stakes are arranged to come off next week Josiah Rogerson an excounty official I was tried for an alleged defalcation in his accounts last week After the jury in his case had retired Rogerson attempted to smuggle a Salt Lake dispatch into the jury room and was detected and fined I 50 for contempt of court In default of payment he spent several days in durance |
