Show TilE GETTYSBURG ANNIVERSARY The veterans of the Philadelphia regiments regi-ments who fought so well to cut short Lees invasion of tho North just twenty four years ago met on tho old battlefield battle-field on Sunday and dedicated handsome monuments to two of the most valorous regiments The old boys had a grand time rallying in the bloody angle and tramping over the field with their hearts fulU of tho memories of the bloody past Gettysburg was practically prac-tically the deciding battle of the war and therefore the celebration of its anniversary anniver-sary excites considerable interest on the part of the whole country Had the result I re-sult of that battle been different tho success suc-cess of Lees northern invasion would have been assured and once having gained a strong stand in the Keystone State it is doubtful if he would ever have been subdued But though the figthing on either side was equally brave i and though tho losses to thor tho-r to the North were almost as great as i those sustained by tho South Lee found I that his command was too weak to proceed pro-ceed farther and so the retreat was begun U be-gun It was that retreat that first told oft of-t the failing resources and thinning ranks t of tho Confederate army The battle was one of tho greatest displays dis-plays of valor ever shown to the world and was particularly marked by the terrific charge of Pick etts brigade the grandest military t cyclone that ever swept down upon an enemy The fighting was bitter every 1 man struggling as he would in the defense I de-fense of his own life and the result was emphatic in the history of the Union 4 Remembering that Gettysburg was as it was a horrible bloody strife it is indeed in-deed encouraging to see its anniversary remembered in so peaceable a ceebra tration as that of Sunday It was I a hard blow to the wavers of the bloody shirt to seo the old vetes go back and tramp over that old battle ground with nothing in their hearts but good f eling for South and North alike and a sincere desire to see the mighty chasm filled up forever c It is such events as this that tel the strength of the ties that bind the two sections sec-tions and show the growing determination determina-tion to have no North and South but in their place tho one great and good 1 Union |
