the night of July 2d 18G2 Sunday morning dawned clear and beautiful a perfect counterpart of the memorable day it commemorates In place of cannon shots however the shrill shrieks of locomotives broke the Sabbath stillness as excursion after excursion reinforced rein-forced the crowd in the street The morn ing was spent in sight seeing and going over tutfield At 130 pin the procession formed at the Eagle Hotel l and r > v Adjutant Whitelar and followed by fhe Gand took up its march toward the place where twenty four years before the Philadelphia men had held their position against the famous Pick els division of Longstreets corps of the Army of Northern Virginia At length they reached the bloody angle The band strikes up Rally Hound the Flag Boys and the old Philadelphia brigade is once more on the ground they so nobly defended against such overwhelming odds The stone fence is still standing behind which the Philadelphia brigade made its heroic stand and the two monuments of the 69th and 71st are located within a few feet of it A few minutes after 2 oclock the 69th marched to the stand erected for tho purpose and there the assemblage was I called to order by Col OBrien who introduced intro-duced Adjutant w CM Dermott who read the list of killed and mortally wounded of i the 69th regiment He then presented Gen 6th regient Joshua S Owen who delivered the oration During his speech the General said that the commander of the Philadelphia brigade when ho placed them at the stone wall in such an advanced position knew that they I would stay there and hold that position till death He referred to the manner in which they got the name of Paddy Owens Regulars and pointed to General Brown as the man who so called them Ho said he hardly knew what to say to the men who twentyfour years ago today emerged from the woods 1300 yards away and made the terrible assault on the Union line Let them place their monument monu-ment where they wish he continued Ar mistead and several others pierced our line and hero within a few feet of this spot he fell wounded unto death Tho renowned phalanxes of Alexander would not have dared to make the charge that Picketts men made In closing he called for three cheers for Ficketts division as a proof of their friendship They were given with a will as were three cheers for General Owens Colonel Reilly then presented the monu Reiy ted to the care and keeping of the Battlefield Battle-field Memorial Association I was received re-ceived in their name by Colonel J Batch elder As soon as Colonel Reilly rose in the name of tho SixtyNinth regiment there was presented pre-sented to him a handsome gold watch appropriately ap-propriately inscribed The Colonel was much surprised and in a few words thanked the regiment for itd kind remembrance of him Before tbo ceremonies begun Mrs Pickett CBcorecl by General Burns took her seat on the platform and the crowd at once cheered her AdjutantGeneral McDermott Mc-Dermott stepped forward and presented her which had been with a beautiful floral cross given the brigade by Mrs Reed of Phila Jelphio and which they now wished to present to her This finished the ceremonies of the 69th and fnished 71st took the platform and Captain Stockton introduced General Burns who succeeded General Baker in command as the orator I fell upon General Wister to turn the monument over to the Battlefield Memorial tur Association and he was so much affected by the sight of the small number of the brigade remaining that it took him some moments to master his feelings and occasionally occa-sionally during his speech his voice would choke and ho with diihculty continued The monument was accepted in the name of the association by Colonel John M Vanderslice of Col Philadelphia R Penn Smith then in a very interesting in-teresting speech turned over to the Memorial Me-morial Association the tablet of Cashinps battery which was also received by Col Vanderslice The crowd then moved near the famous clump of trees where Gowans battery monument is erected When all was ready Col Andrew Cowan introduced Rev Jas K Dickson who offered prayer Mrs Piok K Dckon ofered and ett was then ascending the platform Col Covan arising thanked her for her and also welcomed the wife of the commander presence of the Philadelphia brigade whose husband 21 years ago began the raid on Webbs staff who brought him the order or-der to place his guns where the monument now is and whom he had not seen again till last night He then presented Lorin E Paine as the orator who spoke for about 2 minutes Then Colonel Cowan transferred the monument to the Memorial Association in whose behalf it was accepted by CaptainS Captain-S C Wagner Lieutenant Wm Sawyer on behalf of the Lieutnant for his battery then thanked Colonel Cowan batter and efforts to bring about this dedication making it a success Perhaps the most interesting in-teresting incident of the whole dedication icident was the presentation by Cowan to the Pick Iresentation sword Vhich he Division Association a ett Asociation swor took during Picketta famous charge The party then broke up and returned to town |
