Show I THREE CAUGHT AT FARMINGTON I Old JUan Clark Makes a Break For liberty nut Is Foiled I Marshal Dyer Captain Greenman and Deputies Vandercook and Smith went to Farmington early this morning and brought three cohabs as a reward of their early rising They first captured William H Watson Wat-son who is in charge of the Utah Central Cen-tral station at that place and taking him along with them they found Ezra Clark Marshal Dyer remained at Clarks house with the two prisoners while the three deputies went off on another trail They visited the house of Leonard G Rice who had gotten up before breakfast break-fast and had gone out to feed the hogs As they approached Rice saw them and L had a fairly good chance to get away but he stQod and faced the music He said he was ready to go and would have been just the same had they come a year before When the boys got back to Clarks house they found that the Marshal had but one prisoner left Mr Dyer explained that old man Clark had stepped into the house for a moment and without stopping to look behind he had skipped out the back door and down a garden path into the oak brush below The Marshal could not leave the other prisoner and he was therefore obliged to wait for the return of the deputies which gave the refugee a good start Greenman and Vandercook immedj i ately started down the path after them the latter soon discovering a footstep in the mud Following this track down for some distance they came to a thick clump of oak The leaves were covered with water and it was difficult navigating navigat-ing through the thicket At last however how-ever Vandercook came upon the old fellow crouched in the bushes and in a few moments he was back to the house The old fellow is probably 70 years of age and considering the disagreeable weather he made a very good attempt at an escape When found he was literally wet through with the rain from the trees and bushes but he did i not seem to mind this much After a goodly number of witnesses had been subpoenaed the party started for this city and landed at the Marshals office shortly before noon Later in the day they were all taken before Commissioner McKay to plead to the charge Watson was the first one arraigned He was charged with living with Hannah Watson and Mary Newbold He pleaded guilty and was released on a 1000 bond signed bv Jospeh E Robinson and James R Miller |
