Started in Several Cities The Great Earthquake WASHINGTON August 31At Washington at 950 oclock tonight the desks in tho Associated Press office in the Corcorn building began to vibrate in a peculiar but unmistakable fashion that suggested an earthquake Two shocks occurred The second shook was of longer duration and more severe than the first and a few seconds sec-onds later it was felt in all parts of the city and created considerable consternation Several meetings in progress in vanous parts of the city were brokenup by the frightened members thinking the buildings were f S and rushing from the halls intot1 t tels At Albaughs Opera House the la adfenco became frightened by the shakin ot the building and a stampede ensued en-sued The occupants of the galleries mainly gentlemen jumped to their feet as soon as the shaking began and rushed pell mell down the stairs falling over one another an-other in their efforts to get from the building build-ing and stopped for nothing until they quarter of a minute in the first shock when the earth seemed if the phrase can be used to h lane itself AT ST ixrns ST Louis August 31A very distinct earthquake shock was experienced in this city this evening at oclock and lasted for about a quarter of a minute The shock was not at all violent and resembled the motion of a serifs of water waves The gueats occupying the upper rooms of the Southern and Lindell hotels rushed downstairs down-stairs badly frightened fearing that some catastrophe was about to occur At the Jlnsoiiio Hall where n company of Knights Templar wore drilling pictures swung inward in-ward from the walls The shock was also felt in the Missouri Republican building and at other places throughout the city No casualities have been yet reported AT COLUMBUS COLUMBUS Ohio August 31 lleports arc coming in from all over the city that the shock of an earthquake was distincty felt ulwut 855 It was more perceptible in the larger buildings At the Central Asylum for the insane the largest building for the insane in-sane in the world the furniture was turned around and the patients became so alarmed that the attendants had trouble in getting them to return to their wards At the Institute Insti-tute for the Blind the shock was so strong that the rocking chairs on the floor were made to start in motion and the chandeliers were swayed to and fro with such force that they continued for some time afterwards in itiotion These are samples of the sensation sensa-tion AT AUGUSTA AUGUSTA Ga August 31A severe shock was felt here at 9 oclock tonight followed at intervals by four distinct jars People rushed into the streets and the principal thoroughfares are now filled with frightened people J The town is wild with excitement i The shocks continue Signal Officer Williams reports ten distinct shocks at 951 952 959 I 1001 1007 1021 1027 1029 101 1045 seventyfifth meridian time AT TERRE HAUTE IND TEBBE HAUTE Ind August 31Two distinct dis-tinct shocks were felt The shocks were about ten seconds apart and each was of about twenty seconds duration Windows were rattled and in several cases the plastering plaster-ing was dislodged from the ceilings A large audience was present at the Opera House attending the minstrel show The building shook until the people became pauiostnken being under the impression that the structure was about to fall Those in the galleries felt the shook most severely and they rose and made a rush for the exits The crowds in the other parts of the house followed Women screamed and there was a struggle and making forthe doors Almost the street entire audience fought their way to the AT LOUISVILLE KY LOUISVILLE Ky August 31 At 913 oclock city time a severe shock of earth quake was felt all over tho city lasting about thirty seconds In the fifth story of the large ConnerJournal building the first motions were very decided oscillations north and south which settled into vibrations A general stampede occurred and the people left their houses and ran into the streets all over the city Several public meetings broken and the were up audiences rushed frightened into the streets wildly AT MILWAUKEE MILWAUKEE Wis August 31Large buildings build-ings were shaken to their foundations about 9 oclock tonight by an earthquake shock that lasted nearly a minute People fled in affright to the street Windows were broken in numerous buildings and pictures fell from the walls No particular damage was done The shook was felt only in large buildings and only in the central part of the city It was most severe in the Fourth ward the fashionable as the building build-ing has been expected to collapse for several years AT MEMPHIS MEMPHIS Tenn Augt nA violent shock of earthquake was experienced hero at 856 tonight Its motion was from north to south and lasted fully ten seconds It had a rapid oscillating movement Great consternation was produced Many who were within their offices and residences fed into the streets Numbers who had retired feeling the shock rushed out of their dwell ings not waiting to dress themselves AT SAVANNAH SAVANNAH August 31The people in eveiy part of the city were thoroughly terrified and rushed from their houses into the streets andsought open squares and other places where they would be out of danger of the falling buildings Negroes were particu larly demonstrative and ran about the streets wringing their hands and giving vent to exclamations of terror Several chimneys fell and many buildings suffered There were other damages of a similar nature AT CHICAGO CHICAGO August 31Tee erratic actions on the part of the barometer in the Signal Office here this evening caused the Sergeant Ser-geant to pause in the midst of an observation observa-tion His hands he noticed trembled violently vio-lently and for a moment he thought himself him-self ill The rocking of the large chair in the middle of the room and the rattling of the bottles on the shelf quickly brought him to progress a realization that a quake of earth was in AT DETBOIT DKTBOIT August 31At 9 oclock tonight a shook of earthquake caused considerable excitement in this city It was of short duration but distinctly felt in different tonight which lasted fully twenty seconds The gas lights in the Times building a stone structure swayed to and fro and the windows fairly shook Considerable excitement was created cre-ated in the city all about three minutes They stampeded the town people running out of their houses and gathering in frightened knots in the open air AT COLUMBUS COLUMBUS Ga August 31People here were badly frightened
