Railroad about eighteen miles distant from the city I is probable that the part of the track under water has been covered by a heavy rise in the river Telegrams from cities in South Carolina and Georgia say the utmost consternation prevails on account of the nonreceipt of news from Charleston and many fear that a terrible calamity has happened hap-pened thereIn there-In New York and Brooklyn the shock was not generally felt except where there was quietness and on high ground or in high buildings There was a stampede in an East Side tenement house during which afire a-fire alarm was turned in Electric lights i some instances went out At this writing 2 a m the situation so fa as known can be summed up in two words Nobody hurt Thero has been no communication from Charleston The bridge that has fallen carried car-ried the telegraph wires leading into the city A report has been receivedfrom a point twentyfive miles from the city that the rail road tracks leading from there to Charleston have been submerged Advices from Boston say that no shock was generally felt there last evening New England cities with one or two exceptions report not having experienced any unusual disturbance WASHINGTON September 1 Officials of the Signal Service Bureau report that four distinct shocks were felt here Tho first began at 954 and lasted 4 seconds The second shock was felt at 1004 and was fol lowcdby another at 1010 and was followed by another and by a fourth at 1050 Pro fesor Capen weather prophet of th city predicted in the Republican several days ago that an awful and terrific earthquake shock would be reported about this date He says that it is possible that there will another about 2 oclock tomorrow morning When the shock came last night Capen was in the Republican office writing his predictions As soon as the building began to shake the editors of the Republican and the compositors composi-tors on the Republican and Post which are in the same
