Show > < V V 1 j HONORS TO FORT DOUGLAS I The Numerous Prizes the Sixth Ssi iantry Team Got Aivny With at Onialin About a month ago several of our boys 1 from the Sixth Infantry at Fort Douglas I were sent to Omaha to compete with the I teams in Departments of the Missouri p Platte and Arizona in rifle practice The t I competitions closed August the 14th I amid the presentation of medals to the i i I successful competitors by Colonel W P Carlin on the parade ground at Omaha A large number of spectators viewed the ceremonies which are said to have beer very imposing The totals made by the teams in the departments named above S were as follows The Missouri firing at known dis V tances made 4496 points as skirmishers skirmish-ers 2670 points grand total 71 G6 The Platte made 4396 3705 total 8101 V The Arizona 38911864 total 5755 It will be seen that the Department of the Platte team of fourteen men leads the Missouri team by 935 points and tat of the Departmentof Arizona 2346 points In the skirmish match the head man in the Platte made in two days 379 points the one in the Missouri 234 Arizona 154 General Crook explains the low scores of the Department of Arizona by saying that onethird of the organizations were changing stations during the practice season sea-son and onethird are in active campaign and not represented at the competition Thi tprtninv mnlu > Q J Orpnt r1iFcnpn in calculating the final result t W > > W The figures give first the total for two days firing at known distances the second sec-ond the total for two days skirmish firing fir-ing and the third the grand total number num-ber of points made In the contest the Platte had twelve representatives and two alternates participating Sergeant J W Weeks Company E Sixth Infantry made 320 points at known distances 376 at skirmish firing total 696 which won the first U S gold medal second U S skirmish medal third General Howards medal fourth veterans medal fifth Fifth Infantry medal sixth the Newman New-man medal Corporal F W Benjamin Company FV Sixth Infantry won a gold watch by Eldholm Erickson Lieutenant Z W Torrey Sergeant J W Weeks of Company E Corporal W Benjamin Company F and Private James Manning Company B formed the winning win-ning team from the Sixth Infantry in the regimental team match at 200 300 and 600 yards for the Union Pacific Railroad prize a handsome water set The sameJTort Douglas boys won the Chicago Milwaukee St Paul railroad prize in a regimental skirmish match This last match at skirmishing was pronounced I pro-nounced the most exciting of all the many competitions First Sergeant A Ryan company C made a total score of 545 and First Sergeant Ser-geant Rebentisch company I a score of I 543 against all others and that made bv Weeks of 699 Sergeant James Sedore company H Sixth infantry made a showing of 542 bergeant weeks ot the Sixth Infantry of Fort Douglas Utah the winner of the first place in the team made on the last day the remarkable score of 200 The Sixth Infantry fairly covered themselves I chiefs them-selves with laurels and a return home the I |
