Show t GEORGE BANCROFT Sketch of the Aged White Haired Historian His-torian George Uanorof the aged white haired historian his-torian nons on Thursday reported by the We Toph to bo rapidly failing He came in with the ceiturj having been born Oct 31800 at Worcester Mass His education was obtained ob-tained at Harvard college Cambridge which institution he entered as a freshman fresh-man at the early age of 13 and from which he was gradpated four years later The next five years 4 of his life were I passed abroad He studied at Goet tingen and her 1 Un and traveled 4i through Germany Italy Krtifzrrlmd 4 and Greet Britain making the personal 7 t per-sonal acquaintance of many leading European scholars GEORGE BANCROFrT and men of letters His degree of Ph D was received at Goettin gen in 1820 Two years later he returned to America and for a year served as Greek tutor atHarvard In 1S23 in connection with Dr Joseph Coggswell who afterward organized the Astor library in New York ho founded the Round Hill school at Northampton Mass It was during the same year that he published his first work a volume of I poems In 1824 he issued a trans ation of Heerens politics of ancient Greece and began collecting material for the great i work of his life the history of the United States But the first volume did not appear until ten years later in 1834 The next year 1835 he removed to Springfield Mass w era he resided for three years completing the s o ond olume of his history He was appointed collector of the port of Boston in 1838 and held this position for three years In 1844 ho ran for governor of Massachusetts on the Democratic ticket but was not elected Presi lent Polk made him secretary of the navy in 1845 and he also served for one month as secretary of war He was nade minister to Great Britain in 1846 and during his incumbency of this office he successfully > urged upon the British government the adoption of more lib ral navigation laws He also spent much line collecting documents for his history In HJ9 he returned to this country and con mued his work the body of which was competed com-peted in the tenth volume issued in 1874 iupplementary volumes remained to be written writ-ten two of which were completed and pub ished in 1882 Most of his later life has been devoted literary labor In 1867 he was made minister to Prussia in 1868 he was accredited to the North German confederation and in 1871 to the German empire He was recalled in 1874 at his own request His services at Berlin were very valuable In 1855 he pub ished a volume of miscellanies made up of ontributions to The North American Rev Re-v iew His later life has been passed at Wash in ° ton where his wonderful vitality has made him a frequent topic of newspaper letters |
