Show POSTMASTER JONES Postmaster Jones of Indianapolis is fast bringing himself into disrepute through his schemes for avoiding the CivilService law He has been using his office to further political aims and has neglected the civilservice plank of the party platform Mr Jones will I doubtless have to make an explanation explana-tion of his conduct and that explanation ex-planation will hardly shield him in his doings The CivilService law requires that where clerkships have a salary of 900 per i year the selection from applicants shall be upon examination Mr Jones bought to avoid this provision in a most ingenious way Clerkships that are only worth 720 per year can be filled I by appointment and the competitive test does not apply If the charges against Mr Jones be true Mr Jones quietly and calmly appointed his clerks at a salary of 720 per year Complaint was made to the Department and the Department decided that the clerks provided for in the appropriation with salaries oi 900 came within the provision pro-vision of the CivilService Act It is quite plain that the Indianopolis postmaster post-master has been endeavoring to use his office host party purposes chiefly and the Democratic party is pledged to reform such abuses of public trust and < l it is more than probable that Mr Tones will be reminded of the fact by the President Pres-ident The Democratic party believes that it best servs its own interest and will find its greatest safety in an honest administration ad-ministration of the Government and it finds such conduct as that of which Mr Jones is i accused equally as offensive where a Democratic postmaster is concerned con-cerned as like conduct in a Republican postmaster The party can afford to sacrifice sac-rifice workers but it cannot afford to sacrifice sac-rifice its principles and platform If Mr Jones is guilty as charged he should be removed j if not he should be retained j |
