Show WHERE BUCIf AXAN LIVED = Tito Home of the PIrteentt Prcsi dent of the United States Correspondence Philadelphia Times Times1 Within sight of the city of Lancaster on what is Known as the Marietta stands Vheatlan piker pike-r many years the residence of James Buchanan fifteenth President of T the house United States The is a plain but substantial brick residence and Stands some distance back from the road almost hid by the trees I and shrubs that surround it It makes no pretentious to architectural beauty but has on its face an expression of ease and refinement On retiring from office Buchanan bought this place from Mr w JU Meredith a prominent lawyer of Phil elphia by whom it had been used as a summer residence Here Buchanan passed the last years of his life in quiet agricultural pursuits enjoy ing the society of his many friends and an neighbors Almost with in sight of his house lived his friend the illustrious John W Nevin LL D for many years President oi Franklin amid Marshall College The house stands about half Way up a gentle elevation and is fronted i s by a broad sloping lawn t 1 J w tb JttVll on which row i some fifty varieties of trees and shrubs On the rees right as we ap jroach the house from the road stands a venerable chestnut measuring more than four feet across the base In front of the house on either side of the porch towers a lofty pine The view from the porch is fine looking out over the rich farms of Lancaster county dotted by the homes of the thrifty German farmers In the hstance the cars of the Pennsylvania Railroad continually cross and recross the scene and far away the gray ranges of the Alleghanias meeting the grayer sky bound the horizon The Wheatlands contain twentytwo acres of the best and richest Lancaster county farm lands On the death of President Buchanan the property passed into the hands of Harriet Lane Mrs Johnston the mistress of the White House under Buchanans administration Vhile she owned it the house was almost total ly unoccupied Only occasionally she passed a few months in the summer hem In 1SS4 she sold the place to the present owner Mr George B Wilson by whose kindness we were permitted to see he house and grounds Mr Wilson has in his possession the original deed from 111 Meredith to President Buchanan Its It-s written on parchment and is a very beautiful and most elaborate document |
