Show j TWO CON VENTIONS Some Important Expressions From Prominent Public Men on The Democrats Plan of Action Let the Political Parties Agree Upon an Equitable Division of the Offices at Stake Then Lot Each Party Put Up its = Own Men Mating n Strong Fusion Ticket Since tho question oi nominations for an antiMormon ticket for tho next election elec-tion has been under consideration THE DEMOCRAT has taken tho stand that tho old way of calling a Liberal convention conven-tion should be dropped and that instead the National party lines should be maintained main-tained so far as is consistent with local unity upon an equitable basis This stand as lias been explained editorially was taken unselfishly the only desire being a fair and square division of the the nominations and the maintenance of a course which promises to draw out the greatest possible number of votes in opposition op-position to the Mormon ticket In order tofindout what was the public sentiment is in regard to the matter a reporter of THE DEMOCUAT this morning approached as many as he could find of our leading public men and was gratified to find that there would be but little if any opposition to the plan proposed It is true that there is a good deal of misunderstanding mis-understanding about the matter some going BO far as to claim that Tern DEMOCRAT wants a division but anyone who has carefully read the editorials of this paper in regard to the matter will see and must admit that it is the only plan by which a satisfactory satis-factory division can be arrived at and by which the full vote of both political parties par-ties can be brought out From the many sotlo race expressions heard by our reporter re-porter it must be concluded that this is not only a plan but is positively the only plan upon which a unity can be based SECRETARY HALL was found in his office and upon being asked for his opinion said I think that the central committess of the two parties should call primary meetings to be held in the different dif-ferent legislative districts At these meetings the people themselves should decide upon what course to pursue in order to bring out the heaviest possible vote and should elect delegates to represent repre-sent their feelings in a general convention of the party Then these conventions could decide upon the course to pursue pur-sue I think that both political parties should be more thoroughly organized A fair division of the nominations should be mutually agreed upon and each party should choBO its own candidates For instance where two representative districts dis-tricts form one council district I would suggest the nomination of a Democratic councilman and two Republican representatives repre-sentatives or rice versa There are many Democrats and I think Republicans Republi-cans too who would vote a fusion ticket made up in this way when they would not do so were another course pursued It would I think draw out tho haviest possible antiMormon vote Mi M KAIGX said I am in favor of a fair division of the offices but I think it could be best done in a single convention conven-tion I would not however oppose the other plan ARTHUR BROWN I am strongly in favor of separate conventions It would draw out a larger vote than any other plan JOXVTHAX ROYLE I have no particular preference for any plan but 1 want to see an equal division brought about in the pleasantest possible way SIMON DuI lmIJERI am decidediy in favor of separate conventions I dont want the Republicans to say what Democrats Demo-crats shall go on the ticket and they dont I want us to say what Republicans shall go on We want a fair and square division di-vision of the nominations and this cant be assured in any other way It is the only way to bring out the full voteS vote-S A LEWIS Separate conventions by all means We cant get the full I vote any other way POSTMASTER BARUVTT If I had the disposition or ability to map out details I have not the time I would much like I to see however some plan matured that would interest the voters and give us an election bearing a faint resemblance to an election elsewhere Notwithstanding the Democratic party is continually being snowed under and threatened with instant in-stant and eternal death it will probably continue to exist and the same perhaps may be said of the Republican party Then why not organize these parties locally and thoroughly call conventions commence in the right way endeavor at least to create a general interest I have always thought a larger opposition could be developed in this way and then by fusion make the most of it I read carefully care-fully what the different gentlemen had to say to the Tribune reporter It would seem to me that some plan might be elaborated from Mr Rawlins suggestions that would work well H C WALLCJI am in favor of any process by which a Gentile ticket can be made up upon an equitable basis but in the conquest against tho common enemy I think party lives should be ignored as far as possible GENERAL WKIIB register of the land office said I want to see the strongest possible Gentile vote and I think the only way to get it is to hold separate conventions con-ventions Get both parties interested and they will come out in full force GEORGE CULLENS We want separate conventions of course It will bring out the full Gentile vote BEN SiiEEKb The Democratic party par-ty should organize and decide upon a plan for action If they want to unite with other parties all right but let the unity be an equal l one and let each party nominate its own men J L RAWLINS Mr Sheeks and I arc pretty well agreed upon that point Let there be two conventions and let each party choose its own men COL SA MKIJRITT think there should bo no split as I expressed myself before I have not thought or expressed myself on the waj to insure this JOHN A MAUSIULL We should have two conventions It is the only way to insure an equal division of the nominations nomina-tions There arc many others who are known to favor the separate convention plan but who could not be found today If it is deemed necessary a further list will be published at a later day |
