Show BY LAiiiiT Narrow Escape of the City of Ber lin from Floating Icebergs I Victor Hugo Leaves 810000 to the V V 1oor autl Wills a Pauper t e Funeral V Commencement ofAnother Lively How in Central America Close Call for a Big Steamship NEW YOBK May 23 The steamship City of Berlin from Liverpool arrived hero this morning bringing 143 cabin and 11K steerage steer-age passengers On the 10th instant eho struck an iceberg in a dense fog off the banks near New found land This caused serious damage Many tons of ice fell upon the forecastle deck breaking it through and going down into the hold Two men on the lookout had a very narrow escape with their lives the fog being so thick at the time that they could not see the iceberg until it came tumbling on the forward deck where they were standing Orders were given to cut away the lashings of the life rafts and boats and to prepare them for lowering dase the ship should sink Two of the boats were swung out and the others were being put in readiness readi-ness until it was discovered that the ship I was not making water when the orders were i countermanded The steamer came in collision col-lision with two other icebergs but succeeded in weathering the shocks and reaching this port in safety I |
