Show Campus safety at Salt Lake Community College Christian Leikam Campus Reporter Is being a victim of ofa a crime or being involved in an accident something you worry about at school Last year there were thefts and 24 vehicle burglaries items being stolen from a car at the Salt Lake Community College Taylorsville Redwood Campus and the South City Campus combined One Salt Lake Community College Student 20 year old Hanna Poh a Business Marketing Major says I feel pretty safe Poh doesn't doesn t feel that she's in any danger of a theft but sometimes does feel some risk of a crash as she drives through the parking lot at the Redwood Campus t In Poh's opinion the risk of a fender bender in the parking lot is not because of anything the school has done wrong but because of people driving badly Lt Jeff Willmore of the Utah Highway Patrol is among the officers who provide security at the Redwood and South City Campuses There were ten accidents in Sept according to Willmore Property was damaged in these incidents but no bodily harm You Vou can tell when school starts Willmore said comparing the theten ten on- on campus accidents in Sept to the two that occurred in July when attendance was much lower One incident occurred in iii Sept when a vehicle struck a pedestrian According to II Willmore the pedestrian was injured but not seriously Willmore says the more people that are in attendance the greater the odds there will be an accident or theft on campus Phil Waters of the Utah Highway Patrol also covers the Redwood and South City Campuses Waters says that weather particularly snowy and icy conditions arent aren't so much a factor in car related incidences as is the beginning of the semester They do a pretty good job clearing snow Waters said adding the new influx of students driving too fast not being careful backing out accounts for more traffic incidences Willmore advises to hide items in your car instead i of leaving them in sight Officers randomly hand out Vehicle Safety Reports which have a checklist of precautions to follow such as locked doors windo windows s sup up valuables hidden etc This is intended to help students take steps to avoid being stolen from According to Willmore and Waters one crime that takes place fairly often at is bike theft Bolt cutters can easily cut cable locks on bicycles Invest in a good quality lock Willmore advises Willmore also advises people to record the serial numbers of their property as it greatly helps in the recovery of stolen items Be eyes and ears Waters says encouraging students to be mindful of s suspicious activity Recently a bike was stolen at the South City Campus with two witnesses present The witnesses did not report the theft The thief cut the cable lock with bolt cutters and left with the bike Surveillance cameras have helped greatly in the identification of thieves all allover allover allover over the campuses with the exception of locker rooms Locker room burglaries cant can't be helped because surveillance cameras are not allowed in the locker rooms Willmore and Waters dont don't recommend that anyone confront perpetrators but urge that suspicious activity be reported Eric Cordova 28 a History Major at attends classes at the Redwood and South City Campus Cordova doesn't t E feel that there is much to worry about but still practices common sense by locking his car doors and not leaving his things unattended Cordova knows where to report crimes and suspicious activity at the South City Campus as the police office is in a central location inside the main building However Cordova indicated he wouldn't know how to report a crime at the Redwood Campus The Redwood campus police office is located just off campus north of Bruin Boulevard inthe inthe hithe in hi the Gunderson Facilities Services Building To report a crime on campus call or from a school phone In cases of emergency call r V |
