Show Executive lecture series at Kim Nguyen Contributing Writer Last Friday February 6 automobile dealer Mark MarkMiller MarkMiller MarkMiller Miller donated his time to speak at the Taylorsville- Taylorsville Redwood Campus as part of the Executive Lecture Series organized by finance and economics departments Millers Miller's topic was using goal setting to visualize your future successes It isa is isa isa a process that his dealership M Mark rk Miller Toyota has been utilizing since 1985 when they had 5 million in sales and 35 employees to now when the have million in sales and over employees examples examples' and exercises the audience was introduced to how their thoughts and self image can contribute or hinder their success in achieving their goals Miller stated We behave the way we do because of our self image If you can change this then you can change your performance Until you make up your mind to make this happen then it wont One story Miller shared was about how his company would have three-night three seminars where they would have their employees share one of their goals Some would and some One of the ladies stood up and said she was going to run in the St. St George marathon But she couldn't even walk around the block of where our dealership was because she was that out of shape However a few years later she actually ran in the St. St George marathon The reason why is because she Started to think about what she wanted instead of what she didn't said Miller Once people know what they want then they can start to set goals to achieve it Miller mapped out these guides for goal setting which included Know the big picture Create constructive images Create clear images Have accomplished end result Have accountability Avoid time limits Make them confidential if necessary Make ongoing modification Write goals out Later on Miller had a student from the audience come up on stage Miller asked the the student student to put his hands in front of him and then Miller started pushing The student pushed back The point of this ex exercise was that people dont don't like to tobe tobe tobe be pushed and when people have to do something the less likely it will get done Instead people need to change these have to into want to said Miller As Miller concluded his speech he left the audience with some homework of their own The homework was to begin setting their own goals not only in regards to education but also in five different areas of career social physical health family and spiritual He said there needs to be bea a balance and that he has seen how a focus in one area without a balance inthe in inthe inthe the other areas can lead to problems Such was the case of an employee who focused a majority of his energy towards his career and focused very little with his relationship with his wife A divorce followed soon after The audience applauded Miller as he finished his speech The audience included not only students but business professionals as well Student Emma Kemp said I thought it was excellent I never heard him speak before I have heard of goal setting but it is good to be reminded again of how we can change Matthew a financial advisor with Edward Jones said It was great especially the real life examples that Mark used and shared with us such as the successes and failures along the way Everyone should hear these lectures The speakers in the Series like Miller are executives at various local companies whose lectures cover a gamut of topics ranging from goal setting to international commerce The lectures free and open to the public are held each Friday throughout Spring Semester from 11 to 11 1150 50 am a.m. at the R Redwood Campus in room of the Technology Building A Alist Alist Alist list of speakers and topics can be found on the events calendar |
