Show y Everyone contributing in everyone's learning Y Adriana Salazar Contributing ng Writer As most of us have noticed has a very diverse group of people from all across the world walking in the hallways or in one of our classes Some international students might blend with the crowd so perfectly that sometimes we dont don't notice that they came from a different country except for physical differences But what about the international students that just moved here and have very basic English skills What's behind them Just a difference in hi characteristics As I was interviewing international students I 1 was able to see that they are making a big effort to be here and learn leam more Its It's not easy to learn so many new things and be far away from home How many of us would be able to do that Lo Chang a student who moved to Utah from Hong Kong a month ago said I learned English back in my country but putting it to practice Contributing Continued on Contribute Continued from Al AlI Alis Alis i is very different I needed to transfer out of Writing 1010 to because I didn't understand Lo is a avery avery avery very intelligent and caring person She said she feels that its it's not very hard to tobe tobe tobe be here since most of the people are very friendly Hung Chien another student who has been living in Utah for eight months and is taking ESL classes just like Lo said I enjoy being here because like my teachers and my classmates most of the people I have met are really friendly Hung is living this experience to the fullest She added Everyone here has different lifestyles and andI I can learn a little bit from everyone According to Director of International Student Services Nancy Fillat who has been working with people from different backgrounds for 19 years five percent of students are international She said We are re lucky to have students from 70 different countries because they bring the world to tous tous tous us they contribute in everyone's learning Nancy thinks international students are arc very brave and curious to come all the way across the world She added By attending they are arc able to think and express in two languages although most of them speak more than two ESL instructor Andy Shaw who has been teaching international students for 26 years agrees with Nancy saying I respect my international students They're self- self motivated and they want to learn more Some of them have been through terrible things but they keep trying hard Professor Shaw teaches grammar reading writing and conversation He helps students to get geta a better experience while they're enrolled at The International Student Services staff will give you a helping hand even if youre you're not from another country The staff is always caring towards all students Fillat said My work is to tomake tomake tomake make this experience easier for them Im I'm so happy to have them here my life has been so much better and andI I have less fear of o things since I started working u here I cant can't imagine what my life would have been had I worked elsewhere International students f give a better view They add more more entertainment and more diverse culture 11 r Developmental education OJ Assistant Professor II Cristin Longhurst said International students add interesting and very different points of view of the ones we as Americans have in all discussions She added I am impressed by how well they understand understandS S the assignments and the effort they put into them All this is proof that international people are just justas as important as everyone else They are vivid proof that anything is possible Dont give up Shaw said to all international students I If you run into an international student dont don't be afraid to say hello or keep up a casual conversation Most of them I Iare are here by themselves and dont don't know anyone You cant can't imagine how much 1 you can learn leam about them how interesting they are and what wonderful people they are j |
