Show Times of Change for Basketball YH I Nate Wilcox Contributing Writer The Salt Lake Community College mens men's basketball team wrapped up another successful successful successful success success- ful season recently with numerous players receiving awards Sims was named I Ito to American All-American first team Ahmet made it onto the Region All-Region second team and Bryan Ellis was an Region All-Region honorable honorable honorable honor honor- able mention There is one massive problem those are only three of the nine total departing sophomores sophomores sophomores mores from last seasons season's regional runner up Which means Bruin Coach Norm Parrish and his trusted assistants are about to embark on another chapter of basketballs basketball's version of the never ending story junior college recruit recruit- ing mg Junior college recruiting is 24 hours a aday aday aday day 7 days a week weck every day of the year Parrish said Were going to have a whole new group weve we've had to reload like this before However with as many departing players as the Bruins have especially when considering considering considering consid consid- ering the talent involved this reloading job will be one to marvel Well probably sign three or four players play play- ers in April and then three or four in May and wait until the summer to sign some others others others oth oth- ers Parrish said Fortunately junior college rules are a little easier on the stress levels than that of their big brother the Division 1 Division 1 schools have what's called a viewing period a contact period a dead period period period peri peri- od and a quiet period and what that means is there are times where those coaches can watch your kids play but they cant can't talk t to o them theres there's oth other r times where they can talk to them but they cant can't watch junior college doesn't have any of those rules Parrish said We can sign people starting April 81 8 I believe is the date and we can actually sign players clear up until fifteen days into the next school year That leaves plenty of time for players to arrive in Salt Lake and get situated which is an especially good thing because some recruits come from all corners comers of the globe Well recruit from all over we will have some foreign foreign foreign for for- eign kids again this year everybody sees that we had Senegal and England you know we had Turkey a year ago Parrish said Ive never been to any of those places I wouldn't mind it but to this point Ive I've never had to go Than Thankfully fully we also live ive in ipa a world filled fille with technology tech tech- nol information information ogy i exchange exchange and and UPS Those Those kids r 4 c c r f f a Y l n y k y t Q J JC C X Q Bruin Basketball star Sims ends his career at But like most junior college players Sims looks forward to a basketball career at a university are guys that Division 1 coaches have already seen and they tell us they're good enough we try to get tapes Parrish added In fact Ahmet who had a great career for us his tape that he sent is just comical its it's The Air Up There with Kevin Bacon its it's literally that wooden backboards dirt courts no nets its it's hilar hilar- ious It might have been comical but that tape was also effective Because Ahmet is the only one of nine departing players to have already signed with a Division 1 I school and the water should be just fine considering considering considering con con- hes he's on his way to the University of Hawaii Joining in the ranks of Division 1 will probably probably probably proba proba- bly be almost every one of the other nine sophomores Bruin great Sims is looking to move on with the likes of Kentucky and Arizona State Marc Pratt has had ad aL allot alot I. I ot of interest st Bryan Hi H Ellis u. u all P of o rr d wi will j move on if they want too too Parrish said |
