Show DJ Turned Math Malfi Instructor Returns to Mike Kathryn Jones Faculty Staff Diane Bonilla Lee whom many know as a Developmental Education instructor began her career in radio as a disc jockey though not in the way anyone especially especially especially espe espe- Lee would have ever expected When Lee was working for FM 96 Fever in Florida the disc jockey got gotsick gotsick gotsick sick and asked her to take takeover takeover takeover over while he went to the restroom He was very sick said Lee I ended up not only mixing the next song but giving giving giving ing out the call letters and doing the weather All her playing around with the studio studio studio stu stu- stu- stu dio equipment on her own time had paid off At Radio Lee had her own oldies oldies' show Many experiences followed One of them included working as the first female beat reporter for the NFL covering the Tampa Bay Buccaneers I went in the locker rooms Lee said They had robes provided for the players play play- ers but most of them didn't wear them I would put my hand on the shoulder of the Tampa Tribune editor and go in Id I'd have to turn my head the other way to get the sound bites I needed It was kind of funny Fortunately today all of the players come out of the locker room for interviews Lee said By 1995 Lee was at as an Executive Producer of Operations Here she was told about the need for math teachers at See Lee continued on page 5 Lee cont cant from front frontI I was really into numbers So I just did one class and I loved it And apparently the students really loved me so they kept giving me classes and I just kept doing it it Lee who graduated from Phoenix College and Arizona State University as Summa Cum Laude has been teaching teaching teaching teach teach- ing math at for the past 10 years She has recently been given the Marketing Sales and Development Globe Student Media Center position position position tion where she is in charge of ot marketing the Globe Center advertising or bringing in radio television and newspaper newspaper newspaper per ads and development including scholarships My whole job is to develop partnerships and bring money to the Center for the students Lee said It wasn't until the communication communication communication department received Lees Lee's resume that her cover cover her was blown regarding media experience Lee said They had no idea that I was wasAnd there And then Randal Chase talked me into the job Lee admits that covering the news and producing contemporary contemporary contemporary con con- temporary current issues in programming is exciting and fulfilling but says she really loves teaching the students I fall in love with them from the beginning Lee said This love extends from her Developmental Math courses to the courses Lee teaches in radio production and mance My students today make me very proud Lee said of her radio students They produced produced produced pro pro- a two hour radio magazine magazine magazine maga maga- zine and they were on the air They did news weather sports features interviews and entertainment It was their first time They did well and I am very proud of them What's terrible is that the rest of the college doesn't know about Globe Radio They dont don't hear the wonderful things that our students are doing and wanting to do said Lee Were looking at doing a morning show during the summer and Im I'm teaching an investigative news class for radio television and the news news- paper Were We're hoping to do anoon anoon a anoon noon news format during the summer as well For many students and teachers in the media department department department depart depart- ment there will be no so called summer vacation Lounging at the beach will be replaced by plain and simple hard work This hard work for Lee extends beyond the classroom and into the office I think what needs to bedone be bedone bedone done the most is we need to get this college behind us Lee said speaking of the new territory she now finds herself herself herself her her- self wading through as marketing marketing marketing mar mar- director for the Media Center The College needs to know about us and what were we're doing This includes TVs TV's to show what the students are producing Nobody is listening to Globe Radio We need the students students students stu stu- dents staff and faculty to be excited about the potential in media and support it it |
