Show Bill Bogdan Spends HIS Retired Life Learning Gerald Narciso Contributing Writer Bill Bogdan is a lot like most students at Salt Lake Community College He spends countless hours in the theli li library he interacts with students students students stu stu- stu- stu dents and he even ditched town during spring break to catch some rays in Florida Theres There's only one little difference difference difference dif dif- dif dif- ference between Bogdan and other students Bogdan is 76 years old While most people his age are living in Florida rather than vacationing there Bogdan opts to spend his retired life learning When J l was a freshman at atthe atthe atthe the University of Alabama as asan asan asan an 18 year old the professor said the trouble with these college graduates is that they stop learning So when you people graduate college dont don't stop learning Bogdan said So that stuck with me after all those years It apparently has Along with the post graduate work he did at prestigious New NewYork NewYork NewYork York University Bogdan estimates he has attended ten different post secondary schools Bogdan has attended for the past 12 years and has taken everything from Astrology to Personal Finance I 1 think its it's great said fellow fellow fellow fel fel- low classmate Nate Wilcox They say you can never stop learning and hes he's a great example of that This semester Bogdan is enrolled in just one class Journalism 1610 One of the articles Bogdan had written for the class was recently published in the Globe Now Bogdan can add writing to the list of things he has accomplished in his life And that list isn't short Bogdan was born and raised in upstate New York Though Bogdan initially struggled in the classroom growing up he excelled on the football field His 22 touchdowns he threw as a senior in high school was good enough to land him a scholarship at the University of Alabama After only one year at Alabama Bogdan transferred to Western Kentucky University where he earned his degree in Health Education while competing competing competing com com- as the schools school's Following college Bogdan enlisted in the Marine Corps where he served two years as asan asan asan an Infantry Platoon Commander during the Korean War Coming Corning out of the military Bogdan married his girlfriend Marti The couple had four children and eventually 7 grandchildren together before Marti passed away in 1974 due to a heart condition Bogdan spent the majority of his career in sales He has been a salesman for everybody everybody everybody every every- body from Pharmaceuticals to the US Chamber of Commerce Bogdan has also been involved with the Oakland Athletics and the Better Business Bureau of New Mexico One of Bogdans Bogdan's passions in life is public speaking He has been the president of various various various var var- ious toastmasters clubs in California and New Mexico I With decades of achievement achievement achieve- achieve f j I ment under his belt Bogdan still has a passion to live life 1 to the fullest But with his health problems it has not been particularly easy Bogdan has battled leukemia for which he received chemotherapy and andis andis is currently in remission and andis andis andis is currently fighting Prostate Cancer as well as and My Oncologist told me dont you dare get another See Bogdan continued on page 3 Bogdan cont from page 2 cancer you already have four Bogdan said Life is just one doctor after another for me Typically people with have a survival rate of 20 percent after 18 months But here he is today still making his way to class every Tuesday and Thursday morning Remarkable Absolutely Bogdan has experienced and accomplished accomplished accomplished so much different things in his 76 years one could compare him to a real life Forest Gump I live by a few simple words growth comes from saying yes to the unknown n Bogdan said In life you h have ve veto to take chances If you dont don't you dont don't grow |
