Show Panic at the Discos Disco's newest Pretty Odd Oddis is pretty pr tty boring j David Parker Arts Entertainment Reporter Panic at the Disco takes exclamation name and unfortunately out of their music as well Formerly spelling their name Panic At The Disco the misplaced punctuation mark helped draw attention to the band It was never part of the name to us When we started doing new promo stuff for this album we just told everyone not notto notto notto to use it anymore said the band when explaining the removed exclamation point in an interview with MTV On March 25 Panic at the Disco released their second album Pretty Odd with Fueled By Ramen Records Unfortunately it is a sophomore slump in every way Two and a half years ago after gaining a huge internet following on and Pure Volume Panic At the Disco released their debut album A Fever You Cant Can't Sweat Out also on Fueled By Ramen Decadence and became Americas Guilty Pleasure A lot of people loved Panic A lot of people didn't but no matter what deep down inside whether you admit it or not you sort of liked at at least one of their ri Th M rt dd fl OM songs s. s ey IU a U an an interesting blend of dance punk pop disco and a love for theater not too common with teens Panic At the Disco used to be all about the theatrics using the style in their album clothing and circus type live concerts After writing and recording at The Palms Palm's Hotel Record Studio in their hometown of Las Vegas the four piece band started listening to more classic rock and feeling a little more mature they decided to take their music in another direction So the scrapped the whole album and headed over overto to England to record at the legendary Abbey Road Studio the end result was Pretty Odd Possibly because of the Beatles' Beatles influence they seemed to ditch the theatre i and took over the style of John Paul George and Ringo Their video for their first single and strongest new song Nine in the Afternoon features the band in the marching band type outfits much like the ones worn wom by the Beatles on Peppers Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band In all honesty their attempt to take a stab at being more mature ends up being kind of bland The music throughout the album wasn't too bad They used a alot alot alot lot of different instruments including piano cello violins and trumpets However after about four tracks the music seems to bleed into one another and the vocals are less than strong In A Fever You Cant Can't Sweat Out the singing was a lot catchier more upbeat and fun Now they are slow and kind of boring They also used a lot lotmore lotmore lotmore more of guitarist Ryan Ross Rossas Rossa a as a singer who's s obviously t t to ra 1 1 Cn er Even PUP no a U na sing u though Ross isn't exactly bad hes he's better helping sing harmony back on songs like Northern Downpour After ditching their sound genre and look at least they kept their knack for keeping their song titles sort of quirky quirk with titles like A Handsome Woman The Piano Knows Something I Dont Don't Around and Mad MadAs MadAs MadAs As Rabbits You have to give Panic respect for really indulging in their passions From the theatrics in Fever and the classic feel of Pretty Odd The band fully reflects their current style in everything from music to clothing and even album artwork It might be fun to see which genre or style they try next metal hop hip-hop |
