Show If newspapers disappear so does intelligence Stephanie Gallacher Opinion Editor To me a newspaper is ismore ismore ismore more than a newspaper Its It's a symbol of class a must-have must for any culturally rich society and a nucleus for the industry of thought As society is progressing however talk goes that thumbing through the he news may become a thing of the past as digital media encroaches on print journalism's market If that does indeed happen it will be a most grievous tragedy Theres There's something inexplicably charming channing about holding a newspaper romantic in the most adventurous sense of the term tenn The way that tl the e eink ink sometimes smears the readers reader's fingers where said readers reader's coffee cup had produced a ring of damp moisture just moments before the actual acquiring of the newspaper whether one walks to a stand or opens ones one's front door causing one to whether to-whether whether directly or indirectly indirectly- interact with another human and the mysteries of the printed page Which commas did the editors fight over what inks were used are somehow magical Traditional papers also have a sense of credibility that at least to me even could never match Perhaps its it's the tangibility of the flaky pages between my fingers or the sense that dissolute journalists could never work for a print paper though Im I'm sure some do but regardless I trust the news in r my y hands Barring the emotional sentiments it evokes however the traditional paper has a place in society It is the constant constantin in its readers' readers fickle lives providing a sense of priorities Though this may sound kooky it is in no noway noway noway way imagined With very to pickle last customizations available readers can receive exactly what they want to read While I acknowledge the possibility that people are well rounded and will choose correctly my concern is that there is and will increasingly be focus on infotainment rather than nc news vs What a tragedy that would be to live in such sucha a narcissistic society What is possibly worse that readers once-readers would become stagnant by way of political economical and social ideas A shifted focus to infotainment instead of news could possibly deepen the gap between the rich and the poor But supposing people did continue to read hard news they would still be reading only what they wanted to Without conflict without interacting with people and ideas that one might not agree with there is no vessel for change Arc Are Americans to idle in a pool of ever-denser ever ideas or to continue up the river of f cognitive tive struggles Ralph Waldo Emerson said that each generation must write its own books Safely one can infer that by this he meant the evolution of thought must not cease While features or 01 up-close up stories about real people are enjoyable their information is often purely anecdotal rather than informative and analytical What the American mind needs is dissonance of ideas Wouldn't it be scarier if all the politicians got along A quiet Capitol Hill is worrisome Of course online and broadcast media outlets are not themselves the problem The problem stems from peoples people's use of said media Online media is decidedly more relaxed maybe not with periodicals and news sources but definitely in other communications As evidenced by the Americanization of English convenience e is erosive and quite possibly destructive Newspapers have havea a professional feel characterized by layouts of clean lines and press- press fresh colors Aesthetically 1 h Q f j File Photo Photo Thanks in part to Internet sites like newspapers arc are a dying media haven't a chance to compete But unfortunately Americas America's priorities do not side with quality From an economical standpoint would the complete obliteration of papers nationwide even make a ding Maybe not however Im I'm convinced that it takes much less work and therefore less people to output an online paper All the Gutenbergs would if nothing else be forced to change directions Some skilled workers would just be out Advertising of course must be considered when evaluating a possible economical flop Most papers make money from advertising and even lose on the actual printing Comparatively online news hubs eliminate printing costs while still maintaining control over advertising Online ne newspapers however may not make nearly what their advertisements merit because payment is determined by per-click per activity the only digital measuring With traditional papers the newspapers are paid whether or not somebody looks at an advertisement On that note however many online papers align advertisements in the middle of a story which practice to me is obtrusive and unwelcome but to others may be interpreted as assertive advertising Regardless of its rate of speed the degradation of traditional plastered ink-plastered r I newspapers and associated loss of intelligence is stirring Most papers now run dually in print and t t tonline online and in increasing rl number arc are going online only At the current rate of J decline the last newspaper I subscriber will hang up on ona It Ita a renewal phone call that interrupts dinner on Oct n rT 17 2016 And then it will willbe willbe be over grieves Michael Kinsley of The Washington r Post T TAs I f As long as Im I'm around traditional papers will not II be outmoded My kids II will know how to flip to r Newspapers have an unrivaled readability therefore to me the argument is as simple as the fact that I cant can't curl up with a laptop Its It's just not not 1 the same |
