W Bateman Local Music Reporter Three Rings Records presents sophomore full length release The Camera Behind the Camera Behind the Camera Hailing from San Francisco's Mission Bay district is a piece four-piece indie rock band with catchy hooks and dynamic vocals At times the vocals are reminiscent of Thome Yorke and other times of Interpol's Paul Banks The Thc music is an upbeat combination of both those bands sprinkled with witha a little bit of Arcade Fire features guitarist and vocalist Terry Ashkinos whose day job is isa isa a philosophy instructor Add fonner former actor Ryan Lambert from Kids Incorporated and Monster Squad and out comes conies the founding members of Although it would take some ome sometime sometime time before they realized what they had together With Ryan in Los Angeles and Terry Teny in San Francisco the pair collaborated over a distance Five years later the pair realized they had something special and Ryan moved to San Francisco The pair along with other members managed r. r l t hrs rc d t f r q f r rui ui rn Elep ne it vf r.- r. Cat t tto to put out their EP and debut record These were two tumultuous years for as they struggled with various members and lineup changes That was until drummer Gavin Haag entered the picture Haag brought a vast knowledge of production experience and professionalism in the band His experiences and abilities would lead the band into recording their critically acclaimed The Shivering EP as well as a sold out show at Bottom of the Hill in San Francisco Despite their successes the band thought they needed something else Adding bassist and Daniel Settle the band gained focus and began honing their sound Their newly focused songs got the attention their current home of Three Ring Records With the thc backing of their new label the foursome entered the studio during the collaborating with producer Chris Cline Trail of Dead and label owner Daniel Crowell Add the mastering by legendary Paul Joy Division New Order The Clash Resulting in inthe inthe inthe the energetic and catchy songs of The The Camera Behind the Camera Behind the Camera and leap years from what the band accomplished with prior releases The album opens up with drum sticks clicking in the thc short catchy and energetic Let Go of My Ann The song captures the essence going from explosive to a subdued lull The rest of the eight tracks continue down the same path Occasionally the band throws us a curve with the minute eight-minute epic Hollyhock The opening track sounds like REMs Everybody Sleeps with Lambert singing work is for fools The track continues to build and five minutes into it the members break out into a jam session ending the song The final song Something about Fire is a dark acoustic song urging us to run for our lives The band manages to mix up parts of some of the best indie rock bands out there coming up with an original and refreshing sound that is all their own |
