Show Professor sparkles due to lifelong love l of teaching students students' Lisa Clark Campus Reporter Speaking with MaryJayne MaryJayne MaryJayne Mary- Mary Jayne Davis Associate Professor in the English department its it's easy to lose track of time Her sparkle rivals that of a child on Christmas morning After 19 years of teaching she has settled in quite well at Classes she teaches include women's studies special studies Shakespeare and composition I love students she said I just belong in school that's where I fit That was the choice she made after nearly completing a Bachelors Bachelor's Degree in business I was right in the middle of microbiology one quarter and I just changed my major she said I needed to do what I loved Teaching isn't her only passion Davis speaks proudly of her family and looking ather family portrait t she has a lot to be proud of Among her bragging rights 11 II grandchildren and five great She loves spending time with her family and enjoys having parties for her grandchildren Family has always been beena a bright spot in her life Growing up Davis talks about living on the family farm fann where her father grew up and where she still lives today Oddly enough her mother grew up on an adjoining farmand farm farmand farmand and so she grew up living right between her maternal and paternal grandparents home something she is thankful for But life on the compound wasn't always peachy That was part of the charm chann figuring out how we could make it work she said But it did w work rk and Davis went on to to become a success After working at jobs such as Systems a secretary at a law firm and teaching tennis for Salt Lake County for 20 years she went to the University of Utah and earned degrees in English and women's studies I cant can't s see e myself not teaching she said On theother the the- other hand I would like to go back to school While she thinks she she- might be teaching for three three more years Davis said a a possible political career career- is not out of the question I either She would like to I have the opportunity to l i address issues issues regarding domestic abuse education and women's issues a sign that she is not slowing down anytime soon In addition to a busy day at school Davis also takes an active role in caring for her elderly mother who lives in a separate home on the same farm A typical day for Davis begins with a bowl of cheerios and ends on a sweeter note I eat a half pound of dark chocolate everyday she said Other passions include anything British or Shakespeare a love of flowers and gardening She is also a self described moony as she professed her love for the moon |
