Show N New A e vv v S Season oN N r easo u a s N n N New o N e v vl C l d N c d N 2 h i By Justin McBride Sports Editor A tough three game loss in the Championship match was how the women's volleyball volleyball volleyball volley volley- ball team ended their season almost ten months ago Now I- I i with seven of last years sophomores sophomores mores gone the Lady Bruins volleyball volI volleyball vol vol- I team has a new look Nowhere is that new look more noticeable than at the head coach Shay Clemensen has stepped in into into into to fill the void left by Julie Morgan after Morgan left to pursue pursue pursue pur pur- sue an opportunity coaching at atthe atthe atthe the Division I level at the University of Hawaii J Globe Sports met with Shay Clemensen on her second day on the job for to see what her take is on her new job GS When did you start coaching SC I basically started coaching coaching coaching coach coach- ing club teams right out of high school GS When did you start coaching on the college level SC In 1998 as a volunteer coach at Utah State and I was an assistant for three years GS What made you decide to come to and coach SC I was at Utah State for four years on the Division I level leveland leveland leveland and loved it but while I was there II I I realized that wasn't what I wanted to do my whole life just because of the travel and theres there's not much more than volleyball to it at I level I got my Masters at Utah State and community college is where I wanted to be because I enjoy teaching Community college is the best because I get to have my cake and eat it too I can teach and I get a little diversion so Im I'm not this focused coach that has nothing else on her mind I like to be able to do other things The community college level affords me that The caliber of the the facilities the potential potential potential poten poten- to win a national championship championship championship champi champi- the potential is very high here and that is why I came here GS Does that make it harder for you as a coach having girls you haven't haven it recruited and trying to fit them into your system SC The nice thing about what Ive I've got is they're a bunch of athletes and very athletes They're hearing what Im I'm saying and they're trying it out and its it's been wonderful so far GS What are your expectations expectations expectations of this team both on the court and off SC A lot of sY synergy ergy We had hada a team meeting and talked a lot about goals not just season goals but season pre-season goals and what we wanted to achieve and andone andone andone one of the things we talked about was commitment and unity They've proven that in the first couple of practices Whether we weare weare weare are able to achieve the goals of some of the drills weve we've run they've been carrying each other as a team and to me that's more important If we go to the end of the season and we have a fantastic fantas fantas- tic season but were we're not friends and we barely get along then I dont don't think weve we've had a successful successful successful success success- ful season GS What kind of personal goals have you set for yourself and for the team SC Id I'd love to win a national nation nation- al championship but I want to have fun I want to be a good influence on everyone I come in contact with Coach Clemensen is obviously confident in her players and the system she is bringing to The Lady Bruins kick off their 2003 schedule with a tournament hosted by the College of Southern Idaho on the and of August followed by a match at Western Wyoming on August Your first chance to see the new look Lady Bruins volleyball team will be August and as they host a tournament of their own here at atthe atthe atthe the LAC C |
