Show I What Job Corps is Really About By Chris Fergeson Feature Editor Joshua Cordova is a year old and knows what he wants He is one of the many Clearfield Job Corps students students students stu stu- stu- stu dents who attends Cordova wants all students to know what whit Job Corps is really about and that Job Corps students are just like everyone else Job Corps is a federal program for US U.S. citizens ages 16 to 24 who need educational and vocational training Job Corps is a program that is designed to help these teenagers with educational benefits that they nor their families can provide for them In order to be part of the Job Corps program you must have an income check done on perspective members According to Cordova Most youths qualify because most youths dont don't earn too much money and its it's mostly the youths and not their families families families lies whose income is measured Cordova speaks on behalf of all 30 Clearfield Job Corps students Cordova said Job Corps gave me a second chance at my education He also said Job Corps changed my perspective on life When asked if Cordova would recommend Job Corps to anyone he said I would recommend it only if you have a commitment and want to succeed in life If they are not serious then Job Corps is not for them Cordova was asked how he and the other Job Corps students wanted to be perceived by other people he said When we enter another facility outside of Job Corps we just want to tobe tobe tobe be treated like anyone else Even though we come from low-income low families we still want to achieve the higher education All of us at Job Corps come from different states across America we all have different backgrounds We just want to be treated like everyone else is treated When Cordova was asked how he thought he and other Job Corps members members members mem mem- bers were perceived by other people he said There is a portion of the world that treats us normal but there is another portion of society that thinks we are nothing but juvenile delinquents and that we are drug dealers and trouble makers Joshua's goal in college is a PhD Ph.D. in mental health and be a counselor dealing with issues that affect teenagers When asked how teachers and other members Continued on Page 2 2 4 y ir p 5 SR y i q ti a r r gi 6 n y n T TN N q m Lm Photo By Chris Fergeson Joshua Cordova student and part of the Job Corps is happy to be a I Job Corps Continued from Page 1 he said They are all accepting of Clearfield Job Corps students and they help us out a lot But when he was asked how other students treated Job Corps students he said As soon as they hear some students are against it by treating us like criminals and other students think it is cool Some students students students stu stu- stu- stu dents ask for information about Clearfield Job Corps 90 percent of Clearfield Job Corps students end each quarter with a 30 or bett bet bet- t ter r. r Cordova plans on entering Colorado State University were he will receive his Bachelors and his PhD Ph.D. Cordova says All the students students students stu stu- stu- stu 4 dents at Clearfield Job Corps are great to be around They are funny and when it comes to college work v they are serious Tim Koetitz is the coordinator for the Clearfield Job Corps students Among other things Koetitz drives drives dri dri- ves yes the Job Corps students to j school Cordova said Tim is a great instructor he knows where we weare weare i iare are coming from and he knows our attitudes When asked what their schedule was like Cordova said We Ve wake up at the crack of dawn everyday We Ve leave the center at and arrive at at am a.m. We Ve have bus passes that will get us back to the Center We Ve have to be back at the Center by Sunday Thursday and on Friday and Saturday before lam D t |
