Show Bruins Find Disappointment inthe in the Desert r Valley of the Sun torches Salt Lake Lakein in tournament Charles Barnard Staff Writer The nationally ranked Salt Lake Community College Women's Volleyball team traveled to Phoenix Arizona Sept 27 25 to compete in the Valley of the Sun tournament Entering the tournament with high hopes and a number six national nation nation- al ranking the Bruins returned home with a disappointing 6 5 record started fast in their first match against Mesa Community College They ran off 11 straight points before Mesa got on th the board It was not long before the Bruins put the game away 15 The second game started exactly opposite of the first game Mesa took an early lead and was able to hold on due to service and hitting errors Finally the blocking blocking blocking block block- ing line led by Emily Van Dyke and Taffy Smart came up big against their smaller opponents and the Bruins pulled out the second game 16 The Bruins second opponent was the Air Force Academy The Falcons did not have the fire power to compete compete compete com com- pete with but the Bruins continued continued continued con con- to make unforced errors This proved for an ugly and closer game than it should have been The Bruins won 16 14 16 1415 15 Rocky Johnson led the team with four kills The second day of play started with a clash of two teams ranked inthe inthe in inthe the top 10 Glendale entered the game with witha a number four ranking and showed why as they quickly took a 60 60 6 0 o lead over the Bruins The Bruins tried to rally but Glendale went on a 7 0 run to 10 win the first game 15 The second game started like the first with a 6 0 Glendale run The Bruins tried to fight back but could not get back into the game Glendale finished off the Bruins 15 VanDyke VanDyke Van VanDyke Dyke led the team with five blocks including two solo blocks The second game of the day was against Golden Valley The Bruins continued the habit of starting slow and service errors continued to hurt They could not rebound from all the errors and lost 15 The second game started off close until the Bruins completely fell apart as Golden Valley went on a 11 0 run to win the game 15 Melissa Risher led the team with six assists and Van VanDyke VanDyke VanDyke Dyke added four kills and two solo blocks The next game was against Eastern Arizona The Bruins continued continued continued contin contin- to play poorly but pulled out a awin awin win ovin in the first game 16 Game two was more of the same until Regan Taylor came up with two big blocks as the Bruins added another victory in their win column The last game of the day was played against Scottsdale Community College Finally the Bruins played like they deserved their national ranking They defeated Scottsdale 15 11 15 Setter Kim Nielsen led the team with seven assists The first game of the last day of play was against nationally ranked Phoenix College Colleg The Bruins continued continued continued contin contin- to to have to-have have problems with hitting and service errors They could not come back from the quick start by Phoenix and lost the first game gam 15 11 The second game was yas more of the same as the Bruins lost 15 The next game of the last day was against the number ranked University of Texas at Brownsville The Bruins started slow but Salt Lake once again came from behind to win 15 The second game started like the first one ended but that is when the Bruins fell apart They let Brownsville get back into the game and gained momentum They finally put away the Bruins 15 The final game was not good for forthe forthe forthe the Bruins They fell behind and the frustration started to show Errors continued to kill and Brownsville pulled off the upset in the third game 15 Even with the loss Nielsen had an amazing game with 10 assists and three digs Jeanette Graves added five kills Yavapai was the Bruins next opponent The Bruins did not play great but played good enough to win both games 15 Graves exploded with seven kills and four blocks with or 4 f J.
