| Show A Hole in My Soul Making the College Work for You by Nathan Nelson Editorial Editor Coming back to school is difficult difficult difficult cult especially if the last time you had classes was two years ago After my recent return from a church mission mission mission mis mis- sion the last thing I wanted to be was wasa a time full-time anything But I opted todo todo to todo do the responsible thing and jump back in Besides I had already had all summer long to play As I began the process of going through readmissions and registration tion it dawned on me that it wouldn't be too long until I was sitting in class again taking notes on a lecture Tobe Tobe To Tobe be honest and I know this will sound sick to most of you I was really looking looking looking look look- ing forward to that No joke I really couldn't wait to jump right back into the grind Its It's like this Doing anything that demands all of your energies for two solid years is tough In fact its it's a lot like having major surgery Once its it's over it takes a while for you to get back to your old self Anyway as the first day of school crept nearer and nearer my excitement excitement excitement excite excite- ment was replaced by a growing knot of fear Lets Let's be frank here coming back to school especially after a long is a a. a bit scary f 1 ej r Monday morning I 1 was was a roller roller- coaster of emotion Sweaty palms feverish brow the works With a shaky hand I opened the door to my first class and picked a seat in the back The next turn of events surprised me As the teacher started talking so did one of the students sitting nearby In fact for nearly everything the teacher said this student had a smart- smart aleck comment in return I couldn't believe it Apparently neither could most of the others around me I overheard one mumble under his breath go back to high school The teacher to her credit ignored it and continued Now I am certain that every person person person per per- son in that room had experienced something ng similar before but you dont don't expect it when you reach a college col college college col- col lege or university level Its It's like you expect people to respect the investment investment investment invest invest- ment they've made in their education by actually trying to learn something The difficult part to understand of all this is exactly why some people make it so hard for themselves and everyone around them to learn Now I dont don't really think that this guy was doing it just to bother everyone everyone everyone every every- one but it happened anyway Heres Here's the deal and iid I 1 Yale to say ay this because it makes me old but there seem to be morel more attention freaks at the school now than now than when I Iwas Iwas Iwas was here two years ago What's more all the freaks seem to be of the freshman variety The only thing Ican I Ican Ican can come up with is this today's youth my generation has a serious attitude problem Now I know what everyone reading reading reading read read- ing this article is thinking No big surprise there right Well the difference difference difference differ differ- ence here is that we actually have a chance to change that Look the fact of the matter is this if youre you're sitting in the back of the classroom making monkey noises just to prove how cool you are then youve you've got a problem Especially at a school that youre you're paying money to attend The idea is that you can prepare prepare prepare pre pre- pre pre- pare for a career in whatever you want to do But what employer would hire someone like that Now Im I'm all for individualism and not conforming to everyone else's opinions but theres there's a big difference difference difference dif dif- dif dif- ference ference between being unique and being stupid Making the schoolwork school schoolwork schoolwork work for you and actually working hard may not sound as cool as cruising cruising cruising cruis cruis- ing State Street with the but it will pay payoff off in the long run Im I'm sure theres there's plenty of Generation out there who think this sounds like their high school counselor That's fine with me As long as I can let the educational system system system tem suck my bank account dry in peace Ill I'll be happy Plus who knows Maybe well we'll all get a chance to learn something as well In other words the worlds world's funniest funniest funniest funni funni- est thing right now is school Its It's almost as if we didn't have enough going on in our busy lives so we needed an excuse to do something Oh well welcome back |
