| Show M rD r OHO r f By Eric Bresee Sports Editor The past Breez Through Sports' Sports have been on a single topic but being as the paper will now run biweekly I 1 will try to hit on several topics The Western Conference Champions hard Die-hard Jazz fans finally got a taste of a championship as John Stockton nailed a three-point three shot to send the Jazz to their first ever Finals Throughout the playoff run the whole city even the whole state joined in a way that no other event could Hopes are that everyone enjoyed it while it lasted because may not experience anything anything anything any any- thing like it again Seeing the way this entire state was bound together by twelve really tall ball players was extraordinary The Jazz may get back to the Finals again but the spirit this state showed during the first two weeks of June will not be duplicated The Stanley Cup Champions No matter how upset I get at the Detroit Red Wings and how they stomped on the Colorado Avalanche in the Western Conference Finals I must tip my hat to the way they dismantled the Philadelphia Flyers The Wings used their superior offense to exploit Flyers inferior goalies' goalies Ron Hextall and Garth Snow Detroit even learned something something something some some- thing from New Jersey in 1995 and Colorado in 1996 They call it defense The now-infamous now Left Wing Lock shut down the Flyers' Flyers Legion of Doom line of Eric Lindros Mikel and John LeClair The line combined for 12 points in four games On a sad note days after the Stanley Cup parade in Detroit defense man Slava and Vladimir were injured in an automobile accident They sustained their injuries when their limousine swerved to miss a stalled truck and hit a tree injuries were minor but is fighting for his life in a Detroit hospital reportedly with threatening life-threatening head injuries The E Center CenterI I 1 have praised in the last two sections and if I kept it going people people people peo peo- would start calling me the kinder gentler sport columnist I Ican Ican Ican can not have that Some of you may have seen the new commercials advertising the new Club Seating at the new E Center Im I'm sure some of you have wondered to yourself theE theE the theE E Center The new E Center is the West Valley Events Center Can somebody tell who the genius was that came up with that name A year old could have come up with a more imaginative name than E Center The hoopla around the name stems from a certain certain certain tain Utah law that prohibits the advertising of alcoholic beverages Months ago Coors offered close to five million dollars to have their name on the arena West Valley and Grizzlies official decided ed against the offer because of that law If somebody thinks the name of ofa a beer is on a stadium is going to increase drinking feel free to let me hit you upside the head with a atack atack atack tack hammer Ultimately it is West Valley City officials and the Utah Grizzlies that will name the build build- ing With pressure from the high high- ups er-ups they will sacrifice their financial well being for the good of the community They should be commended for their decision If someone is shallow enough to allow a building name to influence them to drink that is their problem |
