Show C Students Help Produce ROM CD-ROM for Elementary Students By Clarke Caldwell News Editor During spring quarter Salt Lake Community College multimedia majors who tolled enrolled enrolled r in in th aci nc d authoring class participated in a aser service ser ser service vice learning project building an interactive learning enhancement enhancement- module to help the students of Redwood Elementary School improve their study habits and test- test taking skills Visual Arts Instructor Esmay adapted the course to fit the learning criteria She also received a 2000 state SEAMS Sciences Engineering Architecture Mathematics and Computer Science mini-grant mini which the college matched to help complete the project pro pro- The college students will learn about multimedia processes and capabilities and while doing so they have the opportunity to work with these elementary students and help them build academic skills said Esmay Theres real power behind the kind of world real-world experience this kind of course creates Our students stu- stu students students stu stu- dents become excited ard rd a d just a i little littlemore littlemore littlemore more dedicated then they might have been before and if we can affect just t one of these grade school kids in a positive way I 1 cant can't think of anything anything anything any any- thing better Technical Specialties I Division v Chair Steve vw Mansfield and Community Service Director Susan Anderson assisted Esmay Esmay- in applying for the grant in early February The grant is f funded through rough t the Utah Campus Compact an L greem Of 11 state and d private higher education institutions u which are a part of the national coalition committed to teaching students the value of community service Esmay was one of only three people to receive the grant and was the only one from a year two-year college Esmay met with the Elementary principal teachers and shortly after accepting the grant to share ideas on the pro pro- Working together they chose graders fifth-graders as a target group and identified several skills the students should gain Study habits academic confidence better test scores and positive attitudes are traits they would like to focus onI onI onI on I wanted to be sure that they could use our assistance and serve the children in the best way they saw possible said Esmay Stephanie Peterson SEAMS project project project pro pro- coordinator with Utah Campus Compact said that Esmay showed a strong commitment c to the community ty and education for the college and elementary students The final project will be delivered delivered delivered ered on ROM CD-ROM and will consist of video images graphics text and andi i audio compiled into a self-paced self I learning enhancement module |
