Show i Inaugural Baseball Season Comes to a Close for Bruins I By Clarke Caldwell News Editor The mens men's baseball team wrapped up their inaugural season over the weekend winning two games and losing five The Bruins final overall record is 36 14 solidifying solidifying solidifying solid solid- a fifth place finish in their division In Tuesdays Tuesday's game played at Bingham ingham High School the Bruins fell just short of a victory against the College of Southern Idaho losing 15 also got swept by Southern Division Champion Dixie College in a two-game two series losing 7 6 and 11 Pitchers Ryan and Jason Cavaness each took a loss The Bruins traveled to Colorado NorthWestern to o play four up make-up games The two teams split the series won the first game 7 5 as Troy Beckman picked up his team- team leading fourth win of the season Regular right-fielder right Mike Sanford pitched the first three innings of the second game giving up three unearned runs as the Bruins lost 5 54 All five runs were unearned The Bruins played the final two games Sunday winning 5 11 and losing 8 had a 7 3 lead heading into the final inning but eventually gave up the winning run telling the tale of their up and down season This was a typical start for a first year program said Head Coach Bill Groves We started the season with high expectations for ourselves Maybe they were too high We felt we needed to set goals for ourselves early on on The Bruins played nearly all of their home games at the Alexander Dahl Field in Midvale and practice facilities were often uncertain The players overcame a lot of adversity especially with not having havinga a practice field a place were they could call home said Groves We felt more comfortable on the road Hopefully we can have a practice field in the backyard of the LAC this summer where we can work on the different aspects of the game Groves expressed his great appreciation appreciation appreciation to his players and to his Assistant Coach Mike Sagas for the dedication and hard work put forth to prepare the teams team's pitching staff which greatly contributed to their successes this season Im really proud of all my players play play- ers and I 1 know that they all worked really hard through the ups and downs of this roller coaster season said Groves The 16 losses in a row really took a toll on our mental frame of mind we lost a lot of close ball games There were a lot of ifs would haves and could haves Those are things we can build on Our goal is isto isto isto to progress more and more each year and eventually put ourselves into the conference championship |
