Show Salt Lake City is At the Top of Bonos Bono's List By John Nielson Ii Editorial Editor Saturday May 3 1997 will be known in the annals of Salt Lake City as the day came back to town The 97 tour made its Utah stop just in time for the fans that purchased tickets Rice Stadium at the University of Utah was the setting for tri triumphant triumphant triumphant tri tri- return to the Beehive State The cool spring air combined with the excitement of the crowd swelled to a head as the band was lead out of the west side tunnel of the s stadium by bassist assist Adam Clayton Bono interacted with the crowd on a few occasions and seemed to tobe tobe tobe be genuinely touched by the response he and the band received from the audience Bono Bono told the crowd Right now youre you're at the top of my list The crowd responded with an even louder surge of appreciation than before the comment was made music is the main reason I wanted to see this show I heard many of my favorites including One Mysterious Ways With Or Without You and Where The Streets Have No Name Many tracks from latest album Pop were performed including Discotheque and Staring At The Sun While it was the music that brought me to the concert I was also impressed by the massive set that engulfed the entire south end of Rice Stadium The visual effects throughout the show made the audience gasp in awe on a number of occasions The much talked about Disco Lemon did not disappoint as it was utilized by the band to make their first encore appearance The entire band was inside the lemon lemonas as it began rotating like a disco ball The lemon moved north and a large staircase rose out of the floor The lemon split open and the band was inside ready to give the crowd more of what they want want- ed The song Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me from the Batman Forever soundtrack was also performed Gotham City only needed one spotlight to summon Batman but used 13 all focused on one vertex to let Salt Lake know that they had arrived One was the final song of the performance The band quickly to their departed to waiting sines It was clear that Bono was impressed by the crowd and The Edge had to be happy with the audience participation on Day DayDream DayDream DayDream Dream Believer Hopefully this means that will return to Salt Lake City on future tours eager to see the fans at the top of their list |
