Show 1 Student Body President Opens Door to Students by Ernie Geddes Staff Writer Located in the northwest corner on the main floor of the College Center is a group of offices called Student Activities These offices are the home for forthe forthe forthe the Salt Lake Community College College College Col Col- lege Student Association the student government government government govern govern- ment of Yousuf student body president took some time to speak about the very place he works and who he works for fort the students Q Can you give me a laymen's explanation of student government government gov gov- A is formed elected and served by the students for the students The senates senate's main concern is academic and campus issues including issues concerning clubs on campus Once a bill passes the Senate it is sent to the Executive Council If it passes the council it is sent on to the proper authorities such as administration maintenance etc Q What else does do for students ts A The College Activities Board plans and presents activities for students such as performances and BBQ's as well as family programs We try to plan something for every every- one Q What would you say to those students s who say that you and the I II stu student ent government dont don't represent them A I would want to sit down with the stu student ent and find tind out where they attend which campus when they attend and give them a personal personal personal per per- invitation to attend our meetings meetings meetings meet meet- ings and activities Most r of all I would listen to what they have to say I like one on I would say Lets get together and make time lets let's chit chat I will always make time for a student Q is unique in that we have two campuses and seven centers centers centers cen cen- across the valley How do you deal wi with th the problems this creates creates creates cre cre- ates A It is difficult but I attend classes at both the Redwood and South City campuses Whenever I Iam Iam Iam am in the neighborhood I drop by any campus or center I can to see what is going on We the student government have a representative assigned to each campus and center center center cen cen- ter and activities occur at other campuses and centers at least once a month Q Some students feel that the student government is very cliquish cliquish cliquish cli and that you are all your own group that is is you socialize together and dont don't have time for outside stu stu- dents How do you respond A AVe We Ve do see each other a lot because we work together a lot Itis It Itis Itis is important that we can out hang wi with th each other so that we can work well together But our door is always open All of our trips are open to all students A good example example example exam exam- is the Bruin Travel Club Fifty students attended and many were not from student government I think some of those students found out that we are open to anyone getting getting getting get get- ting involved Q The traditional way of advertising advertising advertising ad ad- activities is to post signs around campus but that doesn't al always ways reach h stud students en ts What innovative ways are you looking at to advertise and promote promote promote pro pro- mote activities vi ties A A- A AWe AVe We Ve show c clips Ii ps after the movie in the College Center of past and upcoming activities vi ties We also use the video system on each campus to show the same clips An vi ties hotline is available at and we sometimes try to announce announce announce an an- upcoming activities in class Q What would you want to say to every student at A Please get involved and let me know what I can d do db to tomake tomake tomake make things better the activities hotline was not up to date as of the publication publication cation deadline for the Horizon The most recent activity listed on the hot hotline line was a performance on March 2 at South City Campus H Horizons Horizon 0 s 's weekly feature Lines is still accepting entries for weekly publication Due to space restrictions poetry poetry poetry po po- etry of 30 lines and prose selections selections selections of words or less will be accepted Only one selection per week will be published Entries should be typed or word processed spell-checked spell and andt t free ee of grammatical errors Entries En dies should include name proposed major or title and a daytime phone number Entries should be submitted submitted submitted submit submit- ted by Wednesday of each week prior to printing Prose will be read proof-read and edited for correction if necessary poetry will wiIl be run as Works will not be returned Entries will wil be accepted weekdays in the Horizon of of- fice CC 36 All AU entries should oe De addressed to Justin Wood Feature Editor |
