Show Faculty and Staff Bring Daughters to Work By Marilee Howell Contributing Writer The nation celebrated the Third Annual Take your Daughter to Work Vork WorkDay WorkDay Day on April 27 One faculty that participated in the event was Kathy Walton professor of marketing and business communication Waltons Walton's year old daughter Kyle said that this event helped her realize that she has many career options op- op options options op op- for the future The Women's Issue Committee really got involved with the Take You Daughter to Work Vork Da Day program Walton and her daughter along with about other girls and their parents enjoyed a luncheon hosted by the committee During the luncheon we had five speakers that talked about their choices in life and what they learned said Walton They were all excellent Take Your Daughter to Work Vork WorkDay WorkDay Day was developed to cut down on the number of girls that have Cinderella Syndrome Walton explained that Cinderella Syndrome is an idea that most girls develop at a very young age A girl believes that her job is to tobe tobe tobe be at attractive active Prince Charming will come and save her taking her to a aland aland aland land of riches where she will live happily ever after Walton said it is a syndrome that keeps girls from reaching their greatest potential Walton Valton said the math and science teachers in junior high donot donot do donot not hel help p matters A girl can be the first one to raise her hand in class said Walton Walton Walton Wal Wal- ton but 80 percent of the time the teacher will call on a boy forthe for forthe forthe the answer Walton said such treatment makes girls feel worthless unimportant tant and unintelligent Few programs have been developed to help girls realize they are just as smart and important as boys That is why Take Your Daughter to Work Vork WorkDay Day is so important This program gets girls into the work place so they get a better understanding understanding understanding un un- un- un of the work place and the opportunities for women on Page 2 Faculty and Staff Bring Daughters to Work Continued from Page One They see successful women that they can use as their role models According to Walton role modeling is essential Dr Ann Erickson academic vice president at has also had an influence in helping girls reach their potential Erickson started Expanding Your Horizon a conference aimed at girls from 12 to 15 years of age Walton Valton taught one of the classes at the Expanding Your Horison conference She said it was aimed at building self esteem helping girls realize they can be anything as well as letting them see women who have achieved success in the business world Next year the title of the day willbe will willbe willbe be Take Your Kid to Work Vork Da Day Boys and girls will be invited to spend the day at work However they will have separate workshops The girls will continue to have a similar focus of building their self- self esteem being assertive and helping them see their future in a realistic view The boys will be leaning how to choose a career as well as how to treat women in the work place Women are not here to be the cook and the maid said Walton We need to teach the boys to see girls as capable people Victims of Cinderella Syndrome should know it is not terminal Walton suggests that you look inside in inside inside in- in side yourself and find what makes you happy and what motivates you then find a way to put it into busi busi- ness The fastest growing group of entrepreneurs is women said Walton Think long term and get a vision Believe that you can |
