Show Joint Session More Eating Than Meeting By Valerie Christensen News Editor Proposed government cutbacks are in the forefront of national news perhaps perhaps perhaps per per- haps students should start a grassroots movement The Executive Student Council and Student Senate met in their quarterly quarterly quarterly terly joint meeting Thursday night but it took the participants longer to eat than it did to discuss and vote on their agenda Of course the agenda could have gone much faster if they didn't have to follow the protocol of bureaucratic doublespeak which at one point had President Yousuf voting on both sides of the same issue If they could have just talked instead instead instead in in- stead of passing the floor and could have answered instead of yield to questions the Executive Student Council could have wrapped up business business business busi busi- ness in 15 minutes or less In all fairness there was some political political political po po- po- po discussion going on during dinner dinner dinner din din- ner but it was an exception not a rule The agenda for the meeting was four amendments to the laws by which affect change in the Constitution Constitution Constitution tion of the Salt Lake Community College College College Col Col- lege Student Association Gordon Wilson director of sw- sw student student stu stu- dent activities described the actions taken at the meeting as tuning fine the government However all the amendments voted on were highly ineffectual since they were limited to definition of government policy technical and uniformity corrections and a formal passing of a policy already in effect The first issue sponsored by Vice President David Christensen and Senator Ches Barns amended law by which gave Senators first preference as delegates delegates delegates dele dele- gates to the Utah Intercollegiate As As- The Assembly meets annually to propose legislation to the Utah Council of Student Body Presidents who then submits the proposals to the appropriate legislative body said Weve had problems problems problems lems in the past where Senators think that they can automatically go up to UIA UTA no matter what The law by-law is now amended to give the Vice President the power to serve as delegation chair and choose the delegates that go to UIA said the amendment will allow committee members who have done their homework and are qualified to at attend attend attend at- at tend UIA over Senators who are not as prepared Debate centered around the in inclusion inclusion inclusion in- in of a minimum quarterly and cumulative for UIA VIA applicants The amendment was passed in about fifteen minutes The second amendment on the agenda was the addition of the word college to law by 21 Now the law reads College ties Board Members rather than Activities Board Members Christensen said it was a technical technical technical cal correction to ensure conformity in the law The third amendment raised the quarterly amount of money given to Public Relations Assistants from to to conform with the amounts paid to other Executive Council Assistants The amendment also left the individual amount paid to the assistants to the discretion of the Public Relations VP V.P. rather than having the amount be a joint decision between the Public Relations Relations Relations Rela Rela- VP V.P. and the Student Body President said I have no way of knowing what that person Public Relations Assistant is doing so its it's totally up to the Public Relations Vice President how much that person person per per- person son should be paid The fourth agenda item subdivided subdivided subdivided vided matching funds offered to student organizations into quarterly allotments It was written by but presented by Campus Affairs VP V.P.
