Show GH f I t. t EZ ROUGH sa R vf di 1 I I II I By Eric Bresee Managing Editor i What an amazing week in sports it was Just when you thought you had seen it all something new pops up and surprises the heck out of us There were several moments this week that nearly brought a tear to my eye The key word is nearly Wednesday former Detroit Lion linebacker Reggie Brown spoke with the media Brown had surgery recent recently y to fuse vertebrae in his spinal column He was injured in the Lions-Jets Lions game Dec Dee 21 He lay on the ground motionless and md unconscious for about 20 minutes while doctors tried to revive him He was wheeled off on a stretcher loaded into an ambulance and taken to a local hospital He was diagnosed with a bruised d spinal col col- col and went through four hours of surgery At the press conference doctors wheeled him out to the podium in a a wheelchair and stopped Those in attendance wondered why they stopped where they did because the microphone was on the opposite end of the podium Then as if by a miracle Bro Brown rose and walked the rest of the way to the microphone stand amid applause Brown thanked everyone for their support and the doctors for saving his life After watching this man lay on the ground motionless and unconscious unconscious unconscious for so long and to see him just over two weeks later walking is awe awe- some It makes you realize that its it's just sports As fans we make sports seem as if it is life or death whether our team wins or not But for Reggie Brown sports were life or death and he almost died It should put sports back in its place as entertainment but three weeks from now none of us will remember Reggie Brown and we as fans will go back to our life and death ways of following our teams That doesn't seem right Another moment that took me by surprise happe happened ed in Wednesdays Wednesday's Lakers-Bucks Lakers game Laker forward Rick Fox dove out of bound to save a loose ball In the process he creamed a little boy Fox did not save the ball He helped the kid up and went back onto the court The ball was to be inbound- inbound ed by the kid who happened to be sulking In a kind gesture the official allowed the boy to hold the game ball momentarily The official took the ball and resumed play The game ended with the Lakers beating the Bucks Then I saw the most caring unselfish touching kind-hearted kind gesture Fox grabbed the game ball found the kid and gave him the ball I was dumfounded I could not believe what I saw In this day and age when athletes are kicking photographers photographers photographers pho pho- choking coaches doing drugs and getting arrested it was great to see someone finally think about the fans Even if it was a kid whose dad could afford to buy him authentic basketballs the act spoke volumes about the character charac charac- ter of Rick Fox I mean the next time I see Karl Malone or John Stockton do that willbe willbe will willbe be the first time That act made Rick Fox my favorite player i in the What a week e kt 4 Jt- Jt r f f. f |
