Show f Bruin Men Take over First Place v. v By Andy Crow J Sports Editor rrt t With the Scenic West Athletic Conference schedule resuming this past week the Bruins mens men's basketball team resumed play with big wins against Western Wyoming on Monday 75 63 and Saturday I night against rival 93 Jason Hastings led the Bruins t attack with 19 points against Western Wyoming The sophomore power forward also chipped in 13 rebounds in the winning cause Helping the cause also were Troy and Tim Erickson who both contributed 12 points points' each Sophomore guard Eddie Gill added 11 points also JOT Jor for Salt Lake Western Wyoming was led by Danny Thomas and his 22 points and 10 rebounds Salt Lake continued to play well wellon on the defensive end as the Bruins held Western Wyoming to 33 shooting shooting shooting shoot shoot- ing and also swiped the ball 10 times from the team from Wyoming But the game of the week and most important to date for the Bruins was played on Saturday against the Wolverines of The Bruins prevailed 93 77 against a preseason favorite to contend for the Scenic West Athletic Conference with powerhouse Dixie College But nobody counted on Salt Lake Community C College to be in first place in the conference when this game was first put on the schedule Needless to say this game was supposed supposed supposed sup sup- posed to show the non believers if Salt Lake was for real or not At 3 1 in the conference the Wolverines of were eager to get a win against the Bruins to force a atie atie atie tie for first in the The Bruins were standing at 4 0 in conference play goi going g into the game Along with No 4 Dixie's loss to Ricks whom Salt Lake beat earlier this year the Bruins also had a golden gold gold- en opportunity to take over sole possession possession possession pos pos- session of first place from Dixie in th the region with a victory over Utah Valley The game had a championship atmosphere to it right from the get go The game started out very sloppy and the Bruins led the contest 4 2 with four minutes gone in the first half Salt Lake had one glaring strike against them going into the game Freshman forward and leading scorer Lamar Wright was in his hometown of Dallas Texas for personal reasons and there was the question of whether he would make the game or not It turned out that he didn't make it Coach Norm Parrish inserted Nate Miller into the starting lineup to replace Wright Miller contributed three points in Wrights Wright's absence With a sense of urgency on their part to pick up the load lost with Wright several Bruin players raised their level of play in the winning effort Gill had another big game tallying 23 points on 17 15 free throw shoot shoot- ing Along with Casey Smiths Smith's eight assists Gill also threw in another eight assists Freshman guard Tim Erickson had hada a huge game nailing three pointers 3 en route to 19 points Forward Jason Hastings also chipped in 13 points and seven rebounds But maybe the biggest surprises of the game were Yere the performances of Smith and center Troy Along 3 4 9 I iJ H S G 1 y r oti a Y hr H HI 9 f I I 1 1 S 1 i IW i n Photo by Charles Barnard Sophomore Jason Hastings shoots a throw free-throw against with his eight assists Smith had 14 points on 4 3 point 3 shooting had a huge game also scoring 17 points and was the leading for the game with nine The Bruins travel this weekend to play Dixie and Snow College After passing this most recent test against the Bruins will show what they are all about against two more of the best the has to offer |
