A h Tx Tz T- T x a z i 0 t 1 4 i Sow from Guinea Africa teaches French on the Sandy cam earn pus U an students in Guinea He also said that the relationship between the teacher and student in the United States is less formal than in Guinea When asked which system he preferred Sow said I would rather see it somewhere in between the two systems not formal to the he point of the students' students being afraid of the instructor but not so casual that students forget what they are in school for He said that extremes of both systems may be bad and that the students and the instructor should build a medial respect for each other Sow began his teaching career in 1972 in Guinea as a teacher of philosophy history and French literature Before coming to Salt Lake City in 1983 he took one year of English as a second language at the University of California at Santa Cruz Sow came to Utah on a Fulbright Scholarship This is an international exchange program which he stated is given to a very select group of students In Feb 1988 Sow completed his course coursework coursework coursework work and exams and received his masters degree in political science When asked how he came to teach at the Sandy Campus Sow said that in 1988 he saw an ad in the paper and sent in his resume Somebody else originally got the job but three days before the start of Fall quarter he received a call from Pam Gardner division chairperson of the humanities department Sow said she asked him if he wanted to teach a class at Sandy campus Sow says that although his students and the faculty have said that they would like to see him teach next quarter he plans on returning to the University of Utah to work on his doctorate degree in political science |
