Show t of the holidays 1 Let it last all year long longAS AS A S the holiday season approaches Americans prepare to participate in one of our most cherished traditions the Christmas catharsis In one short month we attempt to tomake tomake tomake make up for a year of neglect From Thanksgiving through the end of December we shower food gifts and attention on the less fortunate members members members mem mem- bers of our society Then shouldering the burden of our new years resolution to lose ten pounds or finish the basement basement basement base base- ment we again turn our backs on the homeless the elderly and the financially disadvantaged Food housing and education hold the key to Americas America's future Yet as a society we fail miserably in meeting these three essentials Is it any wonder that so many Americans seek escape through drugs and alcohol or that our prisons are full of angry unemployable illiterates We decry foreign competition tion and a falling standard of living yet ignore the fact that the quality of our work force is in decline The Horizon knows that there are no simple answers We only know that it is long past time for each of us to take a stand on the issue and act Call on your government to do something and just as important do something yourself If each of you gave one dollar each month we could feed 1000 needy families for a year If every everyone one of you wrote or called your state and Federal representatives something would get done In wishing each of you the warmest of holidays the Horizon hopes this season of love and compassion sustains you through the year ahead We hope too that you will share that love and compassion with those less fortunate |
