C CAB B are OK Dear Editor I would like to thank Carrie Thompson vice president of student activities for her time and patience in helping me to understand understand understand under under- how student non-student won the CAB stand a sponsored sponsored sponsored spon spon- sync lip-sync contest held on Friday Jan 27 in the South Cafeteria I first interviewed Miss Thompson on Monday purely to get information for the scathing letter I was preparing to write to this paper She remained very polite and frien friendly ly lythe the entire time and went out of her way to help me obtain the correct information which impressed me very much So I de decided ded that perhaps a nasty letter wasn't the w way y togo to togo to togo go about this After Ater compiling all the information 1 I was granted permission to use one of the typewriters in the Student Activities Office as all the typing labs were closed While preparing preparing preparing ing my letter Carrie came into the office and said that she had further information if I was interested Of course I was So she proceeded to give me me more information which consequently consequently conse conse- qu blew the basis for my letter out of the water So I decided to write this letter and hopefully clear the air about this whole situation situation situation situa situa- tion for those who are interested The student government receives approximately approximately approximately ap ap- ap- ap proximately 7 7 from each time full-time students student's fees paid at the beginning of each quarter Of that 7 CAB receives approximately to 2 of that money to sponsor the fun activities and programs they do for the whole year When asked if student non-student contestants pay kind any of entry fee the answer was no but 6 t CAB is currently setting about to create some rules for competition of non-members non and students alike like Its It's my opinion that if they want to allow students non-students to participate in these programs they should charge a small entry fee so that no one rides free In the case of the sync lip-sync contest I learned that Maryanne Gregg the winner of the contest and the only student non-student participant participant participant par par- is the daughter of Anne Gregg an English teacher here and an advisor ad isor on the board bf Phi Beta Bet Lambda Beta Lambda a sorority here hete hereon on campus that helps business and nd office occupation occupation oc occupation oc- oc i students develop leadership skills Annes Anne's daughter Maryanne was representing J PEL when she parti participated in the ton contest test The r not into her money she won went to own pocket I also learned that Mrs Gregg j obtained permission from the leaders of the Student Activities Board for her daughter to compete So you see there was no wrong doing in I. I her het competing g beca because e the money never left left the campus Since t this is is a community ity college college col- col col col- t lege and CAB advertised the contest in the 1 Winter Winfer Activity Calendar and on the marquee marquee on Redwood Road it was left open to the jj public 1 a I hope that I have helped to clear up this 1 J messy situation for others as well as Carrie helped me to understand Again let me express express express ex- ex press my appreciation for Carries Carrie's help in getting getting getting get- get ting the correct information for this letter She's quite a personable young woman and Im I'm glad that I had the opportunity to meet her Signed Marla Maria Denney PS I still think that Brandt Carmen armen and Angles Angle's rendition of the B song ong Wig was the best The standing ov ovation tion they received proved that to fo me J |
