Show Theres There's Hope for the World by Dan Metcalf Horizon Managing Editor Just when think you t that the entire world is R t 0 drowning itself in selfishness selfishness selfish selfish- t. t ness and that all people r are bad and apathetic to 4 it fI I l if I I any struggle going on oni I l f. f 4 i around them someone lit 1 d J II I I I t comes along to renew your faith in the world As I left the building building building build build- ing where I work one night last week I noticed the huge quantity of snow on the ground and realized what I would be doing in the next half hour I had previously parked on the street and I knew that the snow plows had done a great number on my car Sure enough there sat my car buried up to the middle of the doors in slush and snow After fighting with the locks and kicking snow loose so I could get the door open I started the car and attempted attempted attern at at- tern tempted to pull out As you can well ell imagine imagine imagine im im- im- im agine the car got stuck even worse than it was before Oh well it was worth a try I was in a pretty bad mood by this time and I got out of the car and stood by the side of the road hoping that someone with witha a big in chains with an electric winch would stop and help me After a while I Iwas Iwas Iwas was about to give up so I started back to my work Just then I saw faint figure through the falling snow coming towards me It was one of my workers co-workers who vho had come to help me We tried to push and rock the car but it just wouldn't clear the snow bank We eventually gave up and I told my coworker coworker coworker co- co worker that I would try to manage something something something some some- thing else I thanked him and sent him on his way I then found one of the maintenance maintenance maintenance main main- men for the company I work for forand forand forand and he helped pull me out with a truck and nd chain I finally did arrive home slumping i lm l l m lf i ii i jl gili 1 r vi my car into another snow bank in the unplowed unplowed unplowed un- un plowed parking lot near my apartment I knew as I awoke the next morning that I would be faced with a problem similar to toone toone toone one I had the night before There I stood looking at my car in its stuck state wondering wondering wondering wonder wonder- ing how I was going to get to school on time when here comes this man in a beat- beat up but sturdy-looking sturdy wheel four drive offering offering offering of of- fering to pull me out He got out his well-used well tow line hooked it to my bumper and pulled me out I thanked him and started to drive away when I noticed that the same man was stopping to help someone someone someone some some- one else I am sure that the man was spending spending spending spend spend- ing his entire morning just going around and pulling pull people out of the snow He was very cheerful and it seemed that he was enjoying enjoying enjoying en en- what he was doing I have often wondered why it is that some people go around doing these kind of things for other people at no cost and on their own time I can always remember that in just about every snow storm or every natural disaster that has occurred in this area there has always been a a choice few people who have always been prepared to help others in need It is to these people that I give my utmost respect and honor They are the hope of the world We usually hear about the bad things that people do to others and how people cheat and steal from each other We also hear about the way people in need are often neglected and how the rich get richer As a newspaper man all these bad things hit me in the face every day It can be quite discouraging and sometimes I can lose hope I think about how it would be if more people would spend time helping others and giving them common courtesy instead of turning their head the other way But I Ido Ido Ido do know that somewhere out there there is isa isa isa a man in beat up wheel four-wheel drive who is trying to help save saye the world Yes there is hope t r l Mg lil i i 1 l iti gE |
