Show Skills Center offers intensive short term job training Brent Edmund Contributing Writer The Skills Center a division of the School of Occupational Education located loc ted at the Riverside Campus provides short term intensive intensive intensive sive job training with all programs requiring less than one year of instruction Initially the Skills Center assists individuals in deciding career possibilities based upon testing testing testing test test- ing and vocational counseling performed at atthe atthe atthe the center With programs ranging from clerical to mechanics to child care attendant the Skills Center provides an open-entry open open-exit open at at- Some of the most popular programs include truck driving and ESL English as a Second Language With classes b beginning ginning every Monday the student can begin almost immediately and proceed at his her own pace and skill level As a follow up the Skills Center provides professional and individual help in securing employment once schooling is completed The student is taught skills to increase job readiness including development of an employment goal preparing resumes and contacting employers Once employment is obtained the Skill Center is available to assist the individual and employer in resolving lv ng pt problems Jean counselor for Office Place Place- ment-Handicapped ment Services said the success rate for completion is approximately 80 percent percent percent per per- cent and the employment rate hovers around 70 percent for most programs Most of the students are funded by Job Training Partnership Act Division of Rehabilitation Pell Grants and Carl Perkins loans Another area of the Skills Center is the Handicapped Student Services Some of the handicapped problems that are addressed include visual hearing physical and learning disabled mental and emotional and drug and alcohol dependant One who is visually impaired is provided with a braille printer readers and a Visual-Tek Visual machine which magnifies assignments books and the computer screen For the hearing impaired a a special telephone is provided In addition a is used to magnify the teachers teacher's voice in order to enable the student to to hear Additional services provided by include include include in in- clude and scribes tutors tape recorded lectures and door ramps openers opener f iw |
