Show i. i i Ballet West to present Anna Ballet West will present Andre Andrei ANNA to the music of Tchaikovsky Feb 20 15 1989 for six performances performances performances mances at the Capitol Theatre Last year Ballet West presented the North-American North premiere of ANNA as its 88 1987 season- season opener The production received rave critical acclaim and played to sold-out sold audiences Based on the famous Tolstoy tragedy in Century Tsarist Russia the ballet tells the story of the ill-fated ill love affair between Anna and the handsome young Count Anna entangled in an unhappy marriage abandons her small son and gives up her aristocratic social social so so- cial dal identity in pursuit of what will eventually lead her to such despair she will take her own life Choreographer Andre was a dancer dancer dancer dan dan- with su such h major ballet companies as the London Festival Ballet the Grand Ballet of the Marquie De Cuevas and the New York City Ballet and formed his own company the New London Ballet in 1972 In 1979 commissioned by the Australian Ballet choreographed his first length full-length ballet ANNA After hearing of the tragic death of a young woman who had thrown herself herself herself her her- self under the train a few miles from his home was vas inspired to choreograph Tolstoy's tragedy ANNA with its immense wealth of characters In addition to ANNA he has choreographed three other works performed by Ballet West Elegy in C Minor and Gershwin by George ANNA features the music of Peter Tchaikovsky arranged and orchestrated with additional music by Guy played by the Utah Symphony Orchestra with Terence Kern conducting In arranging the score for ANNA said The prospect of being asked to arrange a three-act three ballet on the subject of ANNA from music by Tchaikovsky was exciting exciting ex ex- ex- ex citing but also fairly daunting for many of his non ballet scores have been used before The challenge therefore was to find music suitable to the subject attractive to Andre and if possible unfamiliar to the going ballet-going public The score includes music from the opera The Maid of Orleans The Tempest a piano piece from Meditation and The Valse in addition to the seldom performed performed performed per per- formed Overture in C Minor and many other selections Sets and costumes for ANNA are by English artist Peter Farmer of whom it has been said is a chronicler of our times With swift and accurate strokes of pen or brush he captures the pretty elegant kinky absurd fresh faces that are adorably adorning our lives Farmer has designed sets and costumes for every major classic ballet plus many new works and has worked with over 20 ballet companies companies companies com com- all over the world Performances are scheduled as follows Wednesday Feb 15 at pm p.m. Thursday Feb 16 at pm p.m. Friday Feb 17 at pm p.m. Saturday Feb 18 at 2 pm p.m. and pm p.m. Monday Feb 20 at pm p.m. Tickets are 6 to 36 and are arc available at the Ballet West Box Office Monday-Friday Monday and the Saturday prior to performance from 10 am a.m. to 6 pm p.m. all outlets or can be charged by phone to Visa or American Express Express Express Ex Ex- Ex- Ex press by calling or Students with ID can purchase tickets for 4 and discounts are available to senior citizens and groups of 20 or more For more information information information tion please call Ballet West at or the Box Office at |
