I ri t Anne Mulligan r Contributor I EVERY day the students of face many dangers in the parking lots There is ever present danger of being run ron down by parking lot vultures following people through the lots in hopes of getting a parking space Once safely in the car the danger changes to that of an accident caused by a vulture trying to park in the space being vacated vacated vacated va va- before another gets there The risk of being run down on the way out of school is just as bad as the ride in m. Navigating through the par parting parking ng lots is a daily suicide mission Speed limits are not enforced which makes tailgating a common occurrence Yield and stop signs are nonexistent in places of serious need and ig ignored ignored ignored ig- ig nored where wh re they do exist Most students believe that once their vehicle is safely parked theres there's nothing left to fear With all the construction being done on campus this is an idealistic way of thinking as proven by bythe bythe bythe the events of April 13 1994 There was a slight breeze blowing when the crane in the Southwest parking lot hoisted a concrete form into the air As it went up the form fonn tilted slightly and began to spin The fence was flattened under the ann arm of the crane and the form broke apart as it crashed into a dirt pile dragging the cr crane ne down with it Construction workers came running rimming from all directions to move vehicles parked under the precarious position of the crane Vehicles were pushed into the lanes until their owners could claim them and the area was roped off Later when all of the vehicles in the area had been removed by their owners the crane was righted and removed to a safer location This was just one more incident in a year full of parking lot mishaps When will the safety and prevention measures for the parking lots be taken seriously |
